Hi Vernise,
Absolutely! It is not a good feeling at all when you have an instructor that you are afraid to approach. Students need to know that we are caring.
Patricia

Having intereaction with every student is very important for the sucess of each student.

The adult learner need to know that the instructor is approachable and that the students learning experience and career success is the # 1 priorty of their instructor.

The best way for me to interact with students is to make myself available to the students after class or by e- mail and also by phone on certain hours of the day. I still have students that graduated call me when they are stuck on a certain project that they may have done for a friend or family member.

Hi Betty,
Communication is key, and building a rapport with students is healthy. Our students need to know that we genuinely care about them.
Patricia

For me, interacting with students on a regular basis is crucial. Working with career college students means working with issues outside of the class topic. For some of my students, they do not have other people in their lives they feel comfortable speaking to when issues arise. Therefore, I want my students to know that, although I need to maintain my authority in the classroom, they can talk to me about outside issues if they need someone. I have helped students with DV, gaining unemployment and other government help for them and their children, working through relationship issues, and so on. However, remember that there is a fine line we walk when doing this and we should not give them advice but rather help them talk out their issues and find their own solutions. It is also important for them to understand that we can not always maintain confidentiality depending on the situation but we will use discretion with the information we are given.

Interaction with students lets them know they are important to you. A student will try harder and do better in class if he or she knows someone cares about their experience in the classroom. In a classroom that is easy to do by acknowledging each student with eye contact, a greeting, asking them for answers, or complimenting them on a task well done.
In the online classroom interaction takes place in the discussion board, through emails, and in the classroom cafe where students can meet and discuss class topics or ask questions. It's very important for the instructor to engage regularing in all forms of communication with students so they know their instructor values them.

I spend "break" with my students as well as time before and after class. Most of the time we discuss class issues but it can be as simple as the weather.

Interacting with each students give them the idea you are interested in them.
So many instructors go to work, work, then go home without the contact the students need. It actually alienates the student and they are apt to act out.

Hi Michael,
Great advice from your dad! Rapport building is key for a student/teacher relationship to develop.
Patricia

Hi Robert,
Favoritism is definitely frowned upon. All students should be treated the same.
Patricia

I feel that it is important to not been seen as playing favorites. As well as needing to insure that all of the students are learning. Speaking to the students not only lets you gauge their level of knowledge, but it also allows them to show off a little.

It is important to build as many bridges between the instructor and student as possible that will facilitate addressing future issues as they occur. My dad always told me "Make friends before you need them."

Hi Sandra,
Students need to and want to know that we really and truly care about them.
Patricia

because they are all different and want to also show there talent. That makes them feel you are really there for them and that you care.

Hi Jeff,
I make it a point to interact with each of my students daily. Relationship building is important.
Patricia

It is important to interact with each student. This will give the students the knowledge that you:
1. Care about them
2. Show a genuine interest in their efforts
3. Give them equal time with one-on-one situations
4. Are fair in your attention time to students.

It is easy to ignore a student and their response is similar. This is a situation you don't want to experience in a classroom.

Each and every student needs to feel comfortable with you. By interacting with them you cultivate that relationship.

It makes the student feel that he is part of something, that someone cares what he thinks. I always try to ask students how things are handled by their employer, what that student's personal experience has been with the material under discussion.

Interaction with each and every student in the classroom is important because it allows the instructor to see how engaged the student is in the course. It also allows the instructor to begin to build a rapport with each student.

It is important to interact with all students to make all students feel a part of the group. When you interact with students it makes them feel comfortable with asking questions, volunteering and playing a part in the classroom role. You want everyone to feel comfortable in a learning environment and interaction will help with this process.
