I agree with most comments made.Your appearance is really important. Our students have to wear scrubs. They will more than likely wearing them in their profession. We as teachers need to dress proper for our profession. Being on time and prepared. Hands on activities set the tone in the class as well. This can be ice breakers to get the class started. Positive attitude. I know when I arrive at my school I am happy to be there and I enjoy being there so I have a positive upbeat attitude. My students respond well to this.
Communication is the key. We communicate in many ways to our students. Professional appearance, preparedness, listening, being the leader in the classroom, attention to details, body language, and always being present all contribute to our positive instructor image.
Hi Freddie,
I like your attitude! Appearance gains a sense of respect as well. I can tell you look and act the part of a professional/educator.

Another way, besides dress, to show a positive, professional image is to always be on time to class and prepared. You cannot expect students to be punctual or prepared if you do not set the standard yourself.
Whenever I enter the classroom for instruction, I am always dressed professionally. That is, I always wear dress pants, shirt, tie, coat and polished shoes. Even when I sub or tutor outside of the college system, I always wear dress slacks and a tie. This helps to maintain the image of a professional and keeps the boundaries between student and instructor intact.
I also find it helps to have your students address you with a title such as Mr. Polk instead of by your first or last name only.
I think that the instructor exuding a positive attitude about the work environment is important. It helps if the students see you leading by example in terms of maintaining your professionalism.
Also be prepared for class, know your students names, create a rapport with your students, show concern without trying to be "friends", be fair and demand respect. Have a positive attitude and skillful in sharing the knowledge you have.
come to class prepared, know the topic
Hi Tracee,

Hi Carmencita,
I love it! You made me want to come to your class based on your response. I am sure your students look forward to coming to your class daily! Keep up the good work! I can tell you love what you do.

By always showing that you are prepared for class, helps to show the students that you are accountable and supports createing a positive instructor image.
However, there is more to it than just that. For example, I work in the field of Cosmetology, where image is heavily stressed. We emphasize to our students that if we don't look well-groomed and care for our needs, how can we expect our clients to think we will take good care of them.
If I don't come to class presenting the best reflection of myself, I cannnot expect my students to do the same. We want our example to be another learning tool for our students.
As a veterinary technology instructor, I would personally be more comfortable in a shirt and tie, however, I wear scrubs to work every day. I make sure to dress neatly, and maintain proper grooming habits. I have also had to discuss these habits with students who do not. I am also very careful with my language, as not to offend anyone. I make sure to obey school rules about eating and drinking in the classroom. all of these things help to maintain the positive image that the students should have of their instructor.
I make sure I'm there approx. 1/2 hr early. I set up my room. I make sure I have soft comfortable music. I even have treats... Maybe some coffee or juice and maybe some small snacks of some sort.
I treat my students as if they are coming to a motivational educational seminar.
I'm excited and I wait at the door and welcome each and every student.
My room is already prepped and ready.
When I'm excited the students get excited.
The steps I can take to create a positive image would be, showing up for class on time, looking professional in my appearance by upholding not only my own standards, but the schools as well, especially if we expect our students to do the same. Be prepared with the lesson criteria, stand true to your word with the students. And always speak in a positive, and in a respectful manner. Don't find yourself being judgemental against any students or even our own peers, and follow the rules put forth by the college/establishment.

Your dress should be professional. You need to be precise in your expectations, standards and requirements. You need to be on time and prepared for the days activities. You need to act and look like the professional that you are asking your students to emulate. Be the SME!!
it shows by the way I dress, act,I show my students i love the field im in.
Positive image begins with proper attire as well as the proper way to carry yourself as an individual; professionalism is key.
I always try and have a positive attitude...it will catch on. Lead by example.
