Dressing appropriately can definitely help you create a positive image. Students seem to respond to someone much better that way.

I agree that the instructor should always keep things on the "up and up" when discussion comes to the school. Maintain a positive spin on all comments if they are critical or ambiguous. I basically ignore collegues who want to engage in shop talk if it is within earshot of students.

I agree that a professional appearance and a positive attitude are facets for creating a positive instructor image. Though an organized effective delivery for instruction emerged from time spent strategically planning lessons will certainly sustain the responsibilities of that image.

Hi Autumn,
I concur! We should be the professional that we want our students to become. Let's be positive role model material for our students.

Patricia Scales

I think that professional appearance and attitude is a great start. Also being prepared for class and getting to class early can set a great example to the students.

First and foremost, be enthusiastic about your subject and make sure that the students know it. Show them that you are sincere about teaching. Never cease to encourage and motivate them regardless of how bad of a day you are having. If a student is having a problem, employ active listening techniques to show that you really care about their situation. Walk them down to Student Services if you cannot resolve their problem.

Instrutors need to be approachable... the students must feel they can talk to the instructor no matter what the problem is.

The first step is to show up to class on time and prepared. Next, getting to know the students is very important, not on a personal level that blurs the line of teacher/student, but knowing their name and a bit about their background is essential for a writing teacher. On one side, I try to show them that I do genuinely care about their success, but I also do not allow them to run the classroom. It is also important for students to have an image of the teacher as just that. By creating a variety of ways to teach them while staying on topic is also very helpful in creating a positive image.

I agree. A Career College should also teach (by instructor example) the students to dress and communicate as a professional as well as teaching for the career choice and there is no better way than seeing this from your instructor daily.

The most important for me is not to talk negatively about the college, about other students and instructors.

I think that many instructors walk into the class and expect to have a positive image. Especially in adult education, the instructor needs to earn it. It is important to come to class prepared, and ready to talk. I think that instructors who have experience in the field need to talk about it, so the students see that they're a good fit for the class.

Hi Joe,
We must exemplify the professional that we want our students to become.

Patricia Scales

It is important for the students to see the instructor as an authority, and as a positive role model. An instructor can share work experiences and history with the students in order to establish authority in the field of study.

I always arrive early and ensure all of my equipment is operating correctly. I ensure that my clothes are cleaned and pressed. My hair is well maintained and I keep my make-up to a minumum, usually I do not wear any. I always wear my name tag, not only is this school policy, but in the real world you are required to wear ID do to security reasons.

In order to create a positive instructor image, one should do the following:

1.) Dress professionally (if students are expected to follow a particular dress code, the instructor should also do so in our clinical setting).
2.) Present yourself professionally through written and spoken actions.

What you say or do and how you approach it are the key elements to creating a positive instructor image with your students and fellow faculty.

aT OUR COLLEGE ALL INSTRUCTOR MUST WEAR LAB COATS, I BELIEVE THIS GIVE OFF A VERY PROFESSIONAL IMAGE. MOST OF THE STUDENTS ALSO WEAR LAB COATS BUT DO NOT LIKE TO, DUE TO HOSPITAL STAFF COME TO WORK IN DIFFERENT UNIFORMS. I BELIEVE THAT UNIFORMS GIVE A UNITED GROUP THE THE PATIENTS.

- Making sure to be in the clas room when the students show up for class.the instructor should arrive at least 25 minutes before class starts, this allows you to get organze for the day to come.
- Making sure to be prepare for class always.
- In my case, making sure that our uniform is complete and in perfect condition; Studets would follow example, if you don't look the part why should they?

Hi LaTanya,
I love your outlook/attitude. We definitely have to be the professional that we want our students to become.

Patricia Scales

I try and relate to the students but be professional at the same time.

Be a role model for your class. Dress appropriately, talk to your class about your experience in your field. Remain respectable at all times, the students will see you giving respect and they will return it.
