Dressing the part makes an impact on the students, i feel, in the following areas. 1) It tells the students that you care about yourself and your job or position 2) it sets a good example of how to present yourself in that particular field (what is acceptable) 3) identifies the students from their instructors 4)it send a message that you are proud of the institution and environment you work in. This may not be relevant if there are no company clothing options. For example, I would for an art school, and we have the option of wearing a company logo shirt (which shows support and pride) or not.

Welcome everyone, introduce yourself alittle warm talk. Tell alittle about your work experiance projects you have worked on and places where yoy have worked. You are here because yu love teaching and sharing your knowledge of your chosen field

Hi Vickie,
You are definitely on point! As instructors, we must lead by example. We should be the professional that we want our students to become.

Patricia Scales

As a instructor you are leading by example. They see you as the ideal person of that profession and are expecting that all people in that profession look, act and handle themselves the same way. I feel that how we present ourselves to our students has a major impact.

I think the posture of an instructor, the way he/she maintains an eye contact with students showing a positive attitude in a professional way (not like " we are going to be buddies" way) and his/her appearance are some vital elements of creating a positive instructor image. A good instructor should know the limits though, you do not want to look extremely friendly. And by that what I mean is that you should be positive and friendly, but keep the instructor-student relationship on a professional level. If you cross the border of friendliness to show a positive attitude to the students, you might lose their respect.

Hi Christie,
Our students need us to show them the professional ways.

Patricia Scales

Representing the school where you are teaching is very important, and I make that known to all my students. The employers will respect them better and think highly of them. I enforce this very seriously.

When teaching I keep a professional manner that will encourage the students the students learn from my experience in the real business world

You students must see that you are prepared for each day and that you are looking at the days ahead as well. Of course you must keep your physical appearance professional as well as that is the first thing students see. Also I find that restating that students can and should come to you with any questions they have helps students to realize you care about them. More than anything, you must show passion for whatever you are teaching.

Hi Stephanie,
We should never speak negatively about an instructor in front of students. We must all be on the same playing field and support each other. If there is a concern with an instructor, go to that instructor.

Patricia Scales

Hi Kaley,
An impression is everything, good or bad! Students are very judgmental, let's make a great first impression.

Patricia Scales

Setting a good example for the students is always a positive. Whatever we require from our students should be followed by instructors.

Speaking in a positive manner about other instructors is neccessary as weel as management. That promotes a healthy learning enviroment.

You can only make a first impression once. Even if nervous present yourself as the professional that you are and have been out in the field. By displaying this postive attitude it will then relfect upon your students

I agree that preparation and professionalism are extremely important. Getting to class early enough to have activities prepared and the schedule for the day outlined on the board will show students that you are prepared and that they are important to you. It also lets them mentally prepare for expectations of the day. By being unprepared you are sending them the message that they don't matter to you.

I agree. We would like for our students to look professional, to be on time, to be prepared, and to listen to us. We can't have these expectations from our students if we aren't doing the same. If this is what we expect from our students, then we need to do it better. We are the example, so set the bar high.

Hi Michael,
Absolutley! It is easy, be the professional that you want your students to become! Be a role model!

Hi Jennifer,
You are right! I love your attitude. I can tell that you are a true professional, and you lead by example!

Patricia Scales

Dress for success,
be punctual, that's 15 min. early!
be well organized,
be well prepared,
and listen to your students.

Establishing a professional atmosphere by dressing professionally and addressing students in a professional manner sets the stage for student expectations.

It is so important to display a positive image to students. I dress for class the exact way I expect my students to dress.I never want my students to ask why I can have acrylic nails and they can't for an example. Another big one is to be on time for class. As soon as an instructor starts coming to class late, so does the class.
