A rule of thumb for me is that anyone entering the classroom for the first time should immediately be able to identify the instructor from the students. The instructor is dressed professionally and is greeting the students at the door with a smile. The instructor is concerned and dedicated to the education of her students. Although she is friendly, she is not a friend. In addition, she has is able to manage the student behavior to create a positive learning environment.

Hi Paul,
Sometimes students do not realize their potential. As instructors, we must bring out the best in our students, and we must certainly be strong leaders.

I couldn't agree with you more. Especially, with my final phase students. Their next step is into the workforce, and they need to be sure of what they know. It takes a confident authority figure to assure them of their potential.

Hi James,
You are right! As professionals, we should be the professional that we want our students to become.

Hi Joseph,
Absolutely! As professionals we have to always watch ourselves, even in our personal lives.

Hi Paul,
In order for anyone else to have cofidence in you, you must first have confidence in yourself. Students can tell when an instructor is not confident.

As instructor's we lead by example. We shouold strive to be a role model for our students. Professional dress is a big help here. We should show the students what a professional looks like and then act the part.

I agree. Enthusiasm coupled with positiveness present a very positive image.

Yes, I tell my students all the time that we learn best by example both inside and outside the classroom.

Yes, being positive and upbeat are critical to instilling a positive image.

Of course personal appearance is important. But, self-confidence, and a positive attitude are essential. Students need to have confidence in their instructors ability to fully commit to a course of study. The only place they will find that confidence is in you.

I believe it's OK to show you understand your students on a personal and professional level while observing proprietary boundaries.

Image isn't everything, but it's almost always the gateway to the overall impression. One's overall image includes character and personality traits, habits, strengths, weaknesses, physical characteristics, neatness, etc.

So instructors should do things in class like speak clearly and be assertive; enforce rules fairly and evenly; use humor; admit mistakes and move on; don't be wimpy or wishy washy; be decisive yet compassionate; be respectful; review policies with the class and post them if space permits; and finally show them you are trust worthy by establishing a safe environment that is "their" classroom.

Dress professionally, act professionally, set the example. If the rule is no cell phones in class, then the instructor needs to also follow that rule - no double standards. Be consistent but fair. Never make an exception for one student that you would not make for all students.

Hi Laura,
Appearance says a lot about one's professionalism. As instructors, we should look the part as well as act the part.

Dress for success. Also try to keep the students at ease by using your personal knowledge of what you are teaching. Laugh at your mistakes, and always be ready to help with any problems they may have with class

As an instructor you need to be friendly, dress and act professional, and let them know you are here to help them succeed.

I try very hard to always maintane a positive instructor image. I truely believe that you must lead by example so I follow the same rules that the students have. I believe that consistency also is a great way to be fair and earn respect.

I agree with the first impression saying. At our school we wear Chef whites. I always make sure that my uniform is starched, ironed, and bleached. Free of any stains of food. I have my full uniform on and always ready to go. The students automatically know what is what I and the the industry expects to see. I also show them some pictures from various places I have worked of people in uniforms that were not up to par so they can see how it is important to be dressed correctly and be clean at all times to have that great impression when guests or fellow co-workers see you.

i think its very important in the way you present yourself, the way you talk and handle yourself, u might lack self-confidence but no one needs to know that. also i think preparation is key and organization

i definitely agree with the dress part, students learn from examples. lead by example. its really hard with the attitude. it really needs to be left at the door.
