I make sure my students understand that I'm excited to be in class. I do this by first discussing what we are going to review. How it's relative to the field and show examples of the out come.
Your attire must be professional and appropriate. Being early and having all of the material you need and set up before class starts is important. It is terrible to be frazzled as class starts with equipment that is being difficult. A smile on your face always helps too!

To create a positive image instructor must be properly dressed, knowledgeable, be clear on the expectation and show interest on his/her student.
Often in the medical field we require our students dress in a certain professional way. For example, hair pulled back, clean shoes, short nails. As an instructor I think it is very important to follow the dress code that is expected of the students. This helps to create a professional atmosphere and mutual respect.
I believe it is very important to first dress appropriately for your career. I ware scrubs every day to work as an instructor because I have animal kennel duties every day. I think scrubs can be professional as long as they are single colored, with appropriate under shirt, no holes, bleach marks, or stains.
Second a positive attitude about where you work and who you work with. Never put down the college you work at or the other instructors that teach there. It makes the students question if they have chosen the correct college to attend.
Third it is very important to have a positive attitude about the course material. I could be the most boring class that is offered at your college but it is up to you as an instructor to bring excitement to the most boring and unattractive topics in your career. If you are excited then your students will be excited.
Dress appropriately for the class to be presented, project a positive image of your knowledge and ability to pass it along, be fair to the students in your actions, be there for them when they need help, listen to their needs.
Keep your attitude positive and uplifting at all times.
I definitely agree that the instructor should always be professional in all aspects as well as at all times. Your attitude should be one that is welcoming and positive. The instructor should never make students feel as if they are beyond reproach. The instructor should also have a postive outlook on the facility they work for. They should not exhibit a negative attitude towards the facility they work for.
Keeping a good professional attitude and having to moderate your language as well around your classroom.
I believe it comes from within. If you truly LOVE teaching, you will naturally do your best and it WILL show.
Attitude is paramount. The students are like junkyard dogs, they can smell BS a block away.
When you convey to them that they are the PURPOSE to your work and not an interruption to it, they will follow you anywhere.
Children NEED two things: LOVE & DISCIPLINE.
When you truly love teaching, it shows and they will respond positively to it and you. [so much so, I've had other students ask to be in my class] You provide the example of what it is to enjoy, no LOVE your work. Then when you provide structure in your class, they will respect you for it.
There is no greater high than when one of your prior students greets you at the mall and excitedly introduces you to his/her friends or family, and thanks you for being their instructor. Phew, that's just magnificent.
I've been teaching for approx. 23yrs and I can honestly say that it is STILL my passion.
You can creat a positive image by making it clear to students that you are her to teach them and make sure they get a quality education not to be friends with them.
Explain to them that their is a line of professionalism that is not to be crossed by either myself nor them and this approach allowed both of us to be on the same page with out a mis-undetstanding.
The instructor arrive at the class 15 minutes or more before time. Dress professionally, have a warm and welcoming demeanor, a positive attitude, be an inspiration to his students in every session and let students know that he is there to help them succeed and achieve their goals.
to create a positive instructor image:
1)you could maintain professionalism by sticking to your syllabi and course objectives; keeping class time reserved for instruction only.
(2)placing clear and conscise learning objectives for the day on the board, and not getting off subject.
(3) and to be knowledgeable about what your subject matter that you are teaching.
(4)not try to be the students friend.
I'm sure there are various of other ways. but, these are just a few ways.
I work hard all the time to be aware of how I am perceived by my students. The hardest times for me are when my students make complaints about my fellow colleagues. I try my best to avoid these conversations without having the students feel that their concerns are ignored. I remind students to be truthful and constructive on their course evaluations for all the instructors including myself, keeping the comments specific and helpful.
I had real experience students those who came in the class with negative attitude after few months they changed their attitude to positive because students observe other students attitude thats why instructors positive attitude is very important.
Display a professional image and be prepared
Hi Jason,
You are on point! We have to train our students in the way we want them to go professionally, and this includes soft skills as well.

That's a great point. As instructors, we're modeling expectations they will need to meet within their chosen career. Encouraging them to form good habits now will serve them well into the future as generally well-rounded professionals.
In order to create a positive image as an instructor, one should always be professional regardless of what is going on. Use that old saying, treat others like you want to be treated. That statement goes a very long way. Even if the student is having a difficult time and you perhaps do not like them, it is important to treat them like the professional you are grooming them to be. Always encourage the students. Never, ever speak negatively about your colleagues or other staff members and do not let the students either. Never talk about other students with students because it takes away their trust. Show them respect and they'll give it.
Hi Brent,
I love your perspective. I can tell you take your job seriously! Continue to be a great role model for your students.
