There are numerous things an instructor can do to create a positive image. Some things an instructor can do is: dress professionally, speak properly, do not use class time as a therapy session, on the first day of class tell their students their credentials and experiences in the field, and treat all student the same way. Another way to create a positive image is to be seen as caring and interested in students’ lives, but at the same time being known as strict, so students don't take advantage.
It is important to create a positive image with students right off the bat by being organized, professional, and sticking to the rules and regulations set forth by the school. Once students begin to see a break in any of these they may begin to lose faith in the instructor and what they are learning. Creating a positive image is also beneficial to maintain for those times when the instructor is not at his or her best. Students will be more understanding and more accomadating to what the instructor may need to do to prepare or whatever needs to be done. A negative instuctor will pass that on to his or her students, and it does not matter what the topic may be.
I believe not only how presentable you are but also by how prepared you are. As instructor it also important to maintain a good attitude so that it keeps the interest of your students.
In creating a positive instructor image you can take several steps:
1. Being on time
2. Always prepared for class
3. Professionalism
4. Dress nice
I agree. Dress and appearance are huge. If you dont' look put together student may interpret your instruction to not be put together. I believe it sets the presedence. Next is the attitude that reinforces your appearance.
Keeping a professional level is very important. Dressing professional, respecting students and not being too friendly with your students. Fairness with grades and knowing the subject taught are also very important.
Represent a good work ethic. In your previous profession and your new profession as an instructor. Speak with authority and confidence about the days topic. speak loudly and sternly.
Set the ground rules from day 1, making sure that you are the example dress, appearance, and your conduct. Students must see that you are fair and consistent in maintaing the rules. We cannot flip flop.
Students must know that you care about them as individuals. Learn students names as fast as you can no longer then a week in my opinion. They call me Mr. Smith not hey or what ever they want.
I make myself available to the student and their needs for tutoring and address issues even during my free time or lunch, as long as my door is open . One of the most important things is to listen and care !
Well, well. By my dress on the first day of class, I make a couple teaching moments for our students regarding positive image. I have on a ballcap with a twirler on top, carry a dead animal purse and wear a faux fur while chewing gum. After telling them the course name, my name, etc. (to make sure we are all in the right place), I ask them to tell me why I am dressed like this. There are many reasons such as: "Don't judge a book by its cover" (we work with all people in their fields), we don't have a second chance for a first impression, and on and on. It comes around to why they are in scrubs, etc. students seem to remember this drama.
Hi David,
Well stated! We should be the professionals that we want our students to become. Students really do emulate us.

All of the characteristics that you want and expect from your students should be emulated in you ... dress code, professional demeanor but approachable (have a sense of humor at the right times), being prepared for class, being early for class. But most of all being a real/genuine person is what lends itself to a positive image.
Dress and demeanor is important, as well as the language used. I refrain from slang or foul language during lecture and critiques. Treating all the students with the same respect goes a long way as well.
As instructor we lead by example. Being on time, dressed professionaly, the tone of our speech, how we interact with people are all examples of how to mentor the students with positive affective behavior. Being consistent with all that and we demonstrate to them the expectations of how they need to act as students and as future employees.
Hi Richard,
Preparation is key and generally brings about great success!!

Hi Kelli,
I concur! We must lead by example as professionals. We must talk the talk and walk the walk!

Hi Bruce,

By being well organized and prepared it is easier to present a professional image and create respect. It will also be far easier to avoid the common mistakes if your game plan is already set to avoid them.
In order to educate a student in a profession, one needs to act professsional in the process. Greet your students as they enter the classroom. Write the class objectives on the board. Being prepared and in classroom before your students demonstrates a positive learing environment.
A postivie image starts with appearance and grammar. It also happens with learning students names. A positive image is needed to ensure a high quality of learnign can take place.
Simply I just smile and be enthusiastic about the course and material. I always tell my studets never quit because they are very fortunate to be in school unlike other people who are not and would like to and don't have the opportunity. Also, their hard work will always pay off.
