Alfred,

Timely feedback is essential. If the students don't know what they understood or misunderstood on the first assignment/project, how can they scaffold their learning. Nice job.

1. Understanding the difference between formative and summative feedback is important.

2. Generic feedback can be discouraging by being routine.

3 Feedback should reflect a positive tone to help improve learning not a negative tone to criticize.

I thing the feed back has to be timely. It certainly has to come well before the next assignment is due to prevent the same mistakes. Secondly there always has to be a positive element. Even when the student submission has many errors, I try and find a positive aspect. Lastly the student has to be referred to learning support resources such as the learning lab and course guides.

Kim,

Meaningful feedback is SO important. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

The three most important things to remember about a meaningful feedback is being positive (What the student did right), encouraging (What a great job) and informative(what you can improve on).

Kim Colston

Shirley,

Meaningful feedback should helps students improve. When it's provided in a timely manner and provided so the students can understand it - they can improve. Don't forget to tie everything to the learning outcomes. Thanks!

When developing meaningful feedback the 3 most important things to understand are:

1) summative feedback meaning the content and depth and delivery of feedback.

2) Feedback within a timely manner

3) A certain type of method of delivery that is understandable to the student

Dr. Shirley CHuo

William,

Yes - with the components you describe, the students will be able to improve. A goal of providing meaningful assessment.

Thanks.

Dr. Crews: Meaningful feedback should be positive, supportive and constructive in a manner that is easily understood by the student so they can be successful.

Donna,

The rubric criteria are essential. There is a fine line between appropriate criteria and too narrow criteria. We want to provide for creativity as well. Thanks for your input.

The development of a comprehensive rubric is first and foremost, so students know what is expected. Adding a self-assessment enables learners to ensure that all components are present, and they can learn to rate their quality based on feedback. Last, ensure that the objectives are aligned with the rubric and with the goals of the assignment.

Robert,

It is so important that student understand that what they are doing in the class is helping them achieve he set learning outcomes. That is our goal to help students achieve the learning outcomes. Thanks!

David,

You are right on track with your list of three things. They all relate to meaningful feedback and will help others think about how they are providing feedback to their students. Thanks!

Karen,

Supportive and positive feedback is important and we also need to provide constructive feedback so we can help students improve and move toward achieving the learning outcomes. Thanks!

Feedback must be tied into the learning objectives. Feedback should be positive in tone...yet clear as to where improvement can be made. And feedback shouldn't be "extensive." Too much feedback, I feel, can cause the student to think, "Where do I start.?

1. Be specific in what you want the student to know.

2. Be positive and upbeat.

3. Keep the feedback in line with the given lesson's objectives and goals.

Dr. Crews: I try to remember to give positive feedback and lead the student to the place I wanted them to be. Making sure to be supportive but allowing them the opportunity to see where they made their mistake.

Jared,

Meaningful feedback should help students improve. Students and instructors should realize that assessment is not something we do to students, but with students. Your three will be helpful in the feedback process. Thanks!

For me, the following meets the criteria of utilizing meaningful feedback:

1. The feedback must be specific. The feedback must layout what the student did well and what exactly the student needs to do to do better.

2. The feedback must be positive. Positive feedback encourages students to perform better in the future.

2. Finally, feedback must be given in a timely manner.

Jeremy,

Your three points on feedback work together to provide great information to the students. This will definitely help students improve and achieve set goals.

Thanks for your input.
