I think the 3 most important things to remember are:
1. Positive Feedback
2. Constructive Criticism
3. Suggestions for Improvement
I like to praise what was done correctly yet provide constructive criticism with suggestions to improve the project in my own personal opinion. All feedback is personal and never "cookie cutter".
Cherise,
Meaningful feedback should be constructive, be timely, provide a positive tone as well and help the students improve. This is all a part of the learning process. Thanks for your input.
The three concepts I keep in mind when constructing feedback are: 1. Making sure the feedback is relative to the learning objective. 2. Positive reinforcement. 3. I call it food for thought - providing the students with some thoughts they can use going forward.
Jacqueline,
Feedback must be specific, meaningful, clear, positive and constructive. It sounds like a lot to provide to students, but with the help of rubrics it can all be cone. With the constructive feedback, students should be able improve their work. Nice job.
Michael,
Specific assignments tied to the learning outcomes is essential. The specifics can be provided in the syllabus and also through the rubrics. Thanks!
1. Make sure the the feedback is relative, clear and effective.
2. Suggest that the student reply to your feedback with any inquiries regarding not so much as to the grade, but the content.
3. Do not always grade the first submission of an assignment. When suitable, give feedback and allow the student to resubmit the assignment. I frequently do this when a student seems to not understand the assignment and my be way in 'left field'. Students are given an oppotunity to take advantage of the feedback and improve their grades, but not to the point that a grade might go from a "C' to an "A".
The three key components to remember in meaningful feedback would be:
-The assignments should be specific to the topic covered.
-The response should be articulated in nature to explain what you were attempting to get across to the student.
-The response should be specific to that students project so he/she feels that the instructor has addressed their questions, and/or responses.
Mark,
Definitely we want to tie our rubrics and feedback to the learning outcomes. It is important for students to understand the expectations and what they should be able do upon completion of the course. Thanks for adding to the conversation.
The most important things to remember when giving feedback for online assignments and projects are that the feedback should be a) tied to the learning objectives, b) specific and detailed as opposed to generic, and c) supportive (positive) in some way. I think all feedback can incorporate these traits. When it does, the student is more likely to understand what the feedback indicates and make use of that to improve.
Joseph,
Meaningful feedback is important for all students and essential when providing some type of evaluation of students' work. Being positive and constructive in your feedback helps students move closer to the learning outcomes. Thanks!
When giving meaningful feed back it must be consistant to eliminate confusion. You must have a positive tone and make it constructive.
Maureen ,
Right on. We have to be positive, yet provide constructive criticism so that students can improve and have a sense of accomplishment as they move toward the learning outcomes. Thanks.
Audrey,
These factors do lead to meaningful feedback. And, meaningful feedback is the key to helping students improve and move toward the learning outcomes. Thanks for your input.
Hi Classmates and Tena. I think what must be remembered when giving feedback to students is to be specific as to what they did well or not so well; be positive in how you phrase the feedback so that they do not feel demoralized; and, make sure you applaud their effort in doing the assignment to begin with. It should never project a negative sense of judgment - this is not constructive. As instructors, our role should be to build confidence even when pointing out areas where the students have erred.
Maureen
I believe the three most important parts of feedback:
1. Inform the students what they did right.
2. Inform the students what they did wrong.
3. Inform the students how to improve.
Note: Don’t forget to praise their efforts!

Kenneth,
When we, as instructors, have the experience of being a previous online student, we do see things differently. Thanks for your feedback.
I believe the 3 most important things to remember are 1) individualized; 2) constructive and 3) motivating and would have to add frequent and the right method which may include a phone call session.
My previous experience as an online learner provided great examples of what I believe is an “art†to provide feedback that is meaningful to the student to achieve the learning objectives. One of my professors would end her email feedback to me with “Ever cheering you onward!â€
Jacquilin,
Right on. We have to tie our feedback to the objectives so the students can see how they are achieving the set learning outcomes. Thanks!

Patricia,
I like #1-2. What exactly do you mean by #3? Please expand if you have the time. Thanks for your input.
