Different learning styles , paying attention to students learning behavior, following course rules and policies online.

This module really gave some great information on record management, couseling management, conflict management, and attrtition management. I plan to have a thought out plan in place for all of these topics. It's important that as online instructor I am one step ahead of my learners!

Reply to Lawrence Bufalino's post:I agree, I know when I deal with one of these difficutl learners I will be looking over my notes!

It is important to have a reliable and consistent method for keeping track of communication.  Students have many reasons why they may not be participating and communicating appropriately.

It is important to have procedures set in place for all people who are taking your course to understand and be able to go back and check through. If these are in place, when there is something that arises that goes against the expectations that are mentioned or communicated, there should be an immediate solution. If I am teaching the class, I am the enforcer of the expectations.

This last section reiterrated the main issue i have noticed this sequence.  Most of my students are on the ball, getting everything done,

I need to be more sepcific in the class expectations and requirements from the get go.

Establishing and maintaining good and consistent communication is crucial to provide an e learning enivornment for the student.  Feedback  and counseling if needed is a needed to make a student be supported and achieve their goals.

  • Keeping course records.
  • Communicating with students.
  • Counseling students.
  • Dealing with undesirable behavior.
  • Resolving student conflicts.
  • Minimizing student attrition
It is importantl to learn how to incorporate these 6 discussions listed. Record keeping is extremely important to making sure that we address the issues with students. Keeping communication alive  so they can feel as though they are part of the  learning system, we need to deal with disruptive behavior immediately to keep a safe and computible atmosphere and also taking part keeping each student involved very important that we minimize students from dropping out or lossing interest.

By recoginizing the labeling these types of students and knowing they may show up in your online class, will help the instructor be better prepared of what is to come in an online setting.

I find this content very informative, historically I have taught in a seated setting and dealt with these types of personalities. This is good information on how to deal with them virtually.

It is important to stay on top of the students responses and participation to the subject in order to identify any of the possible issues which can arise that may impede the the students ability to complete the lesson

The teacher must also be aware of the institutional policies regarding how to address and solve these issues.

elearning doesn't eliminate all of those same issues we have in a traditional classroom of instruction.

This area takes organization and diplomacy.  Working with students remotely can be a challenge when it's not face to face.

I learned to manage students from the beginning of the course and frequently there out.

This module reminded me how important documentation is and the channel used with counseling students. I also appreciated learning some new ways to deal with disruptive behavior before it begins. I cannot wait to use it next week!!!

Maintaining a good record keeping system to manage the flow of information is important. All online instructors should have a file folder on rsponses to quizzes and exams, discussion and chat transcripts, emails, and assignment answer keys. When professors impletent a record keeping system they reduce their stress and can focus more on teaching.

Ensuring students do not feel alienated during the entire course--not just the beginning of a course--is the instructor's role, which can be addressed with regular interim progress reports and surveys. I will start chunking course workloads to help students from becoming overwhelmed by the amount of work required to complete an online course.

Module four of the Online Teaching Techniques has reminded me of the importance of keeping records of communication with students. Also, I appreciated the information on undesirable behavior of online students.

Just a couple of comments today.  This module reemphasized the importance of communication and organized record keeping.  When dealing with students behaviors and conflicts--document, document, document.  From day one, we should be on the top of our game, willing to look at our own issues before  we deal with students.  For me, that issue is procrastination.  If I expect certain behaviors from them, I need to model good characteristics myself.  Now technology--a computer instructor told me that young people who have grown up using computers may be great "gamers", but never assume they will be computer whizzes in the classroom setting.  Good IT is a great support asset.

This section gave valuable information on effectively resolving potential causes of conflict.  I was really impressed, it gave some great insight on handling such matters, above and beyond the enforcement of the code of conduct.
