What's Your Generational Style
Which generational style resonates most with you and how do you think that came to be?
My style is definitely Generation X, I believe that is because of how and when I grew up. However, I have traits that tend to be associated w/ Baby Boomers and Traditionalists. I think that is probably due to being raised by those Generations. While I don't share many of the characteristics of the Millennials I feel like I value their contributions and understand their strengths having worked w/ them through different developmental stages in their lives throughout my career. Millennials and Generation Z are growing up in a radically different time than their predecessors. It will be interesting to see how they use their extraordinary talents and resources they have grown up with.
The style that I relate to the most would be the millennial style. I do a lot of marketing and I think it keeps me a little younger in my thinking.
Mine by birth is Generation X. But I seem to be more muture for my age adn resisnate more with the baby boomers.
I am a Boomer in the sense that is the generation to which I am born and value hard work in order to move up. I thought I was a mix of all of the groups. I love constant feedback, because many things are new to me. I love technology and what it does for us to make our lives easier and streamlined, yet love having face-to-face meetings to talk about things vs. typing emails and responding by email threads. I think talking about things resolves things quicker.
I most relate with Generation X. I value equality, inclusion, change, and team-work. I'm very optimistic and can adapt to technology easily. As members from this group, I too lean best through interactional learning. For these reasons, I most related to Generation X.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing your personal observations, Mitra!

I was born in the 60's and did have a working mom... and now, I am a member of the Sandwich Generation... It is interesting to me that I do resonate with much of Gen X-ers, but also share some qualities of Baby Boomers and Millenials.
I am optimistic and value teamwork.
Born in 1946, I was one of the first Baby Boomers and raised by strong traditionalists in the American South. It was not until college, I learned new ways of thinking - Civil Rights came to the social forefront while the draft and Viet Nam loomed in the background. I began working in the late 70's and struggled for years against the glass ceiling. I am a blend of generational styles and enjoyed seeing my entire family in this lecture.
Well, one of my degrees is in Communications, which helps me a lot because as part of my studies I learned how to communicate effectively with others. Also previous work experiences with people from different cultures gave me necessary skills to deal with cultural challenges.
Eunice,
Excellent point! I'm curious...how do you adapt your communication to people of different cultures?

My generation style is Gen X but having to work with people of different ages, children and adults I have learn to interact with different kind of people and different generations. There are also differences between cultures. Were I work we have to deal with people from different nationalities and cultures and that is another thing to consider.
Sedonia, It's great that you are aware of all generations and their preferences so that you can meet them where they are. Keep it up!

I realize that God has created each of us for a purpose and we can skillfully learn from each generation. I believe that I can accommodate both the traditionalist and the baby boomers and even the Gen X. It is definitely a mental thing with the Mil generation. My greatest task and feat is that of communication and the language that they use. I am currently working with that in terms of hiring a person that will fit with this generation and yet able to adapt to the baby boomer era. I don't have any doubt that I can do this because with God on my side all things are possible.
Sedonia, Great awareness of yourself. What do you need to adjust or modify about your preferences to meet those of other generations?
Dr. Jean Norris
I resonate with the traditionalist and baby boomers. I was born during this time frame of the boomers and I hold true to values and principles that have been instilled in me by my parents and the religious community in which I grew up in.
My generational style is a mix of both baby boomer and generationx. I prefer communication by both email and face to face meetings.
Angela, Excellent awareness! It's great to be able to adapt.

Although by my birth year, I would be considered Gen X, I seem to fall more under Millenial, although my ex-husband was a baby boomer, so while I have many Baby Boomer work ethics, I am very well versed in electronic communication due to younger siblings & having millenial step children. This helps me a great deal in my interaction with many different generations with my students. I'm very adaptive to their communication needs & levels.
I'm a traditionalist type of person , I like to trust people and authority
