This is important because they simply need to be aware of the status during the entire class. If a student sees that their grade is starting to slip, it can help to motivate them to work harder.
Hi Rhonda:
By consistently allowing students to have an idea of how they are doing in class, they have the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible. By doing this, they promote a more successful outcome for themselves by the end of the course.

I believe it is important to keep students in the loop of their learning progress. It helps them to focus or re-evaluate on what they can work on to improve their learning or get a better grip on the subject matter at hand.
I must confess that I have been slow in keeping students informed of their status in my classes--I have not been as empathic as I should have been. I have started to see that they are anxious about their progress at each step. I have become more cognizant of this and have vastly improved in this area.
Not knowing the grade or score from the test will create more anxiety on the students. This might preceived by students that you do not care about how they progress through the course/program. By keeping the student's up to date of their progess, it will give them chance to improve their performance as early as possible(not on the last minute).

Students need to be informed about their grade status so if they are not achieving a satisfactory grade they have time to turn their grade around. Possibly by studying harder for tests or spending more time on projects and homework.
It is important to keep students informed of their status at all times because it helps them succeed. I know instructors who never share grades with their students and the students do not know where they stand. Students who are doing good in an course will then continue to work hard to maintain their good grade and students who are doing poorly know they need to work harder and improve in order to pass the course.
