Hi Kristine:

By consistently allowing students to have an idea of how they are doing in class, they have the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible. By doing this, they promote a more successful outcome for themselves by the end of the course.

Keeping students informed can greatly increase student motivation and retention. For example, I have had situations where students have failed the first written examination in the course, however, their status in the course was not in jeopardy because of the many other assessments that the course included. The student who only focuses on grades and does not realize the "balance" that I see in my gradebook may actually lose motivation to the point where they may think about quitting school. They may think that returning to school was the wrong decision. It is important to keep students informed of their status to target these students' needs.

It is important to give them regular feedback so that improvements can be made while the information is fresh in their mind.

Hi Cynthia:
The nice thing about keeping students informed about their status on a regular basis is that it allows them the chance to make changes in study habits as soon as possible, which may foster a more successful outcome.
