A student who doesn't get feedback doesn't know how much more they need to work to meet their grade goal. The student may also get very frustrated because it is somewhat disrespectful to not give feedback in a timely manner.
Hi Laurie:
By consistently allowing your students to know where they stand in your course, they are given the chance to make small changes in study habits that might help promote a more successful outcome at the end of the course.

So they are not surprised, even though they know they are not performing well. I have noticed a disconnect with accountability when performance is not good. The student wants a grade they thinks they should have (for e.g. poor performance in a certain area for instance taking exam and quizzes). I have a student who does not want to study and start the unfair grading system (percentage) for exams and quizzes. I am reviewing the grading percentage again with each student as a refresher and explaining the test are a part of excessing knowledge.
I supply my students a weekly evaluation with their letter and numeric grade on it for them to see. I use this as an opportunity for the students to see where they stand and if they need to step up their game so to speak. I also use it as a chance for me to to locate errors that I might have made... Which I hate to admit happen from time to time while using a electronic based grade book.
It is imperative that students know how they stand, but it is most important that a student with "problems" be informed, but then counselling be given to help them.
The most difficult thing is to give the little student who is always there, works their hardest, but still does poorly what they really deserve. We tend to want to give extra credit, retakes, etc. but in reality, we are not doing that student any favors with a social promotion. Especially, in career education.
It shows that you are engaged and care about the success of the student. It also gives the instructor plenty of time to make any necessary corrections to instructional methods and gives the student time to brush up on competencies they are lagging in.
Hi Katrina:
To put that another way, the more often a student has access to their status in the course, the better chance they have of making small changes in study habits that might make for a stronger outcome at the end of the course.

Hi Daniel:
And, by showing them where they stand as soon as possible, they may be able to make changes in study habits to promote a stronger outcome by the end of the course.

They need to know if they need to put more effort in a certain area.
This should be done on a regular basic,so that student will know how they stand at all times.
Hi Yvonne:
And, the nice thing about doing this on a regular basis is that it allows effective follow-up. What if you made suggestions for changes in study habits, and the student didn't make any and continued to have poor outcomes as a result? By having regular feedback sessions, we might more successful reinforce the need for those changes and promote a stronger outcome.

Hi Dennis:
Letting students know where they stand as soon as possible is great in that it may allow them a chance to make changes in study habits that can facilitate a more successful outcome at the end of the course.

It is Important to keep students inform of their status in a course at all times so that we can know how they are doing in the course and what t areas they need to improve.

I make it a rule to have all grades posted in 24 hours, 48 hours for research papers. If I am attending a conference out of town I let me students know this may be delayed and when to expect to see their grades. Just as we hold the students accountable to have their work in on time, I feel we should also be accountable in getting their work back to them in a timely manner. Students want to know where they’re at in a course and it’s our responsibility to provide them with that information. They have to budget study time just as we have to budget time.
Students need to know how they are really doing in a course. There are some students that may think they are doing well when actually they are not. It is also important for instructors to give feedback and return graded assignments promptly.
Hi Cheryl:
And, by showing them how they are doing on a regular basis, the student may be able to make changes in study habits as soon as possible to foster a more successful outcome at the end of the course.

Hi Sandy:
Something else that's nice about this technique is that we can show student what changes may be needed in study habits as soon as possible to facilitate a stronger outcome at the end of the course.
Regards, Barry
I think it is important to keep students informed of the their course status as it will allow them to know if their study methods and techniques are effective or they need to be changed.
If students see that are excelling in courses, the techniques used become valuable and give me more self confidence. If students are not doing well on quiz and test, they can get additional assistance from instructor on their study techniques and methods to improve their overall class grade.
It is important to inform students of their status in course because it helps to boost their confidence in their learning and it shows that you are concerned eith their learning.
Hi Barry,
Provides students with feedback. When students knows their scores on a test immediately, they feel less anxious and less stressful to work on their weaknesses.
