Students need to know if they are performing to standards that are not only going to allow them to pass the course, but know if they are excelling. Corrections need to be made early in to a course to get the best results.

Students want and need to know how they are doing in the course. At the career college where I teach we have a midterm and the instructor is to let the students know how they are doing. I also like to let them know before then. Also by letting the students know how they are doing, then they can seek out assistance if needed.

Keeping them informed of how they are doing will help keep them on track for what they need to do to geet where they want their progress to be.

Hi Becky:
When I receive those kinds of questions when there are still several assignments, I say two things. One, I explain that we can estimate their final score "assuming they get 100%" on every assignment. Two, I explain that because this is impractical, it's better to wait to re-examine this questions the day before the final exam for the very reason you described.

if a student is informed of their status in class they will know how much harder they will have to work to pass or what they will need to keep a 4.0 average.

i give students progress reports weekly so they know were they stand with att. grades and labs.

Students like to know where they stand in the class and on their progress. It is important to have advising sessions with students to help them know how they have been doing on assignments and also this give the instructor the ability how to further help the students reach their goals

It allows them to stay focused on the material at hand. If they are un aware of how they are doing in class, the studend tends to worry about the unknown, which pulls thier focus away from the instruction. Also evaluation allows they student to know where the're strong and weak points are, alowing them to focus on the areas needing improvement.

It lets the student know exactly were they stand and were thier strengths and weakness are. it also give them a sence of completion as they more forward.I like to give a mid phase evaluation to let students know were they stand before its to late to recover and not pass. It also shows that i care about thier success.

Hi Brenna:
And, students get the chance to make changes in study habits sooner than later, which promotes a more successful outcome at the end of the course.

Hi Warren:
Similarly, it also allows them the chance to make SELF changes in study habits soon than later to promote a more successful outcome at the end of the course.

Hi Deborah:
Also, by allowing students to know where they are at all times, they may be able to make changes in study habits sooner than later, which will promote a more successful outcome.

Keeping the students informed of their lab and test grades help them to stay focused on the class. It also provides them with an avenue for feedback to the instructor.

Communication is the key and its a 2 way street

Students need to be informed at all times. If they are not doing well, it gives them achance to study harder or perhaps get a tutor.

Yes I agree I learned this teh hard way. I was etaching at a local school that uses teh electronic gradbook. I thought that once I put the grades in and hit enter they could see them. Well i also had to hit "publish" for that to happen. Boy were they upset over time.

They want to know as soon as possible on a moments notice of their progress, so they can make adjustments if needed.

Knowing how they are doing is important to them so that they can rfelect on it and see where they need to refocus.

Keeping students informed on a regular daily/weekly basis alows time to correct for any concerns of weakness before its to late.

I try to give students progress report after the first week and before the third week. This gives students a good idea of where they stand. They are sown their test grades after each exam but often don't know if they are doing well over all. Progress reports give them a "Heads-up" if they are falling behind or an "Atta-boy" if their doing well.
