Hi Catherine:
Absolutely - by allowing students the opportunity to see where they are at on a continuous basis will help them make changes in their study habits to get better results.

Regards, Barry

The student needs to know where they stand so they can improve if its needed.

Hi Shannon:
That's a great idea to allow students more time to see their progress.

Some institutions are heading to a method of electronic grades, allowing the student the ability to check their grades using the internet.

Hi Amy:
Keeping the student informed fosters a positive relationship with the student. It also may help keep the instructor in an "approachable" light.

Hi Marlene:
I think the more frequent and current we can keep our students, the better. Electronic gradebooks are great, but I know not all schools have access. I alsways try to offer some encouragement, support, and advice whenever I meet with a student as well.

It will provide the students a guide as to where their strengths and weakneses are in the subject. Keeping them abreast of their progress will show them where they need to place more effort.

Students always like to know where they stand academically. In my classes, I always let the students know where they were in the course when they asked. I also gave and academic advisement or evaluation at mid-point in the course. This way the student had a handle on what their grade in the class was currently, and what if anything they could/needed to do to bring it up to passing.

It is important because many times a problem or trend can be rectified before it is too late. It also encourages the successful students by having a recognition of their accomplishments.

Some students do not sit down and assess this on their own so frequent reminders are the best way to help students succeed. Early intervention if there are problems is vital to ensure success.

I agree 100%, at our institution we also keep our students dated on a regular basis. That way they have time to re-assess and make the changes they need to before the end of the term.

So that it is not a complete surprize to the student when he/she is failing the class or is at risk at failing if he/she does not do well on their final.

It is important for students to know how well they are doing throughout the course so they are not "surprised" when they see their final grade. I updated the gradebook weekly so each of my students know their progress in the course.

So they are not surprised at the end of the course. Sometimes students that are doing poorly, not showing up for class and not participating for some reason don't realize it is going to effect their grade. They need to realize how much it is. On the other hand students that are not the best test takers are pleasantly surprised and relieved when they realize how important everything else is in class and they are not doing as poorly as they think they are.

Keeping them informed helps them to do better and it keeps them motivated.

That way they know how they are doing, and where they need improvement.

It lets them know where they stand and if they need to study more. Also, if they know by mid-quarter that they are just not going to pass the course, they can withdraw without failing and re-take the course at a later date.

I do my student evaluations by the 15th of each. This way if they were out ,they know want date there ready and available for review. Their monthly evals. consist of monthly hours, acadamic monthly test scores and an overall grade average. Plus areas that need improving or where I expect them to be the following evaluation

Students need to know their progress. Returning any evaluation prompting and going over questions can help make the evaluation relevant. This can be another learning experience. Also, the last thing you want is a "surprise" at the end of the quarter. Knowing their progress enables students to take the necessary steps to ensure success.

If a student knows where they stand in a course it may motivate them to change their habits of studying if they are preforming poorly.

So students understand where they stand at that point and what area they may need to put a little more emphasis.
