It cuts off all complaining of students, also it works as a tool to keep them on track with course work.
There should be no surprizes regarding status/grades for the students. By keeping them apprised of their status, it allows them to "fix" or maintain their course of execution.
Grades are the ultimate motivator to a student in your class. I use an online grade-book where students can see the impact of not turning in an assignment in real-time.
So they know how they are performing on a regular basis. It also shows that the instructor cares about each student's on-going performance.
As a student I want to know how I am doing. Feedback is an important part of maintaining motivation and bridging the teacher / student relationship of professionalism and respect.
Hi Tammy:
Frequent and immdeiate are ways for students to on-course correction. When they see corrected mistakes made days later, it loses it's impact. But when they know immediately, that can be used to reinforce the correct information.
Of course, besides sharing grades and status, this gives us an opportunity to encourage, offer support, advice and suggestions, and just show that we care. This will help build trust and respect as well.
Regards, Barry
It is important to keep the students informed because they then know how they are doing, what areas they need improvement in and if they should be reconsidering how they study.
I always have my student's grades available to them and I love using an Excel gradebook that I downloaded to keep track of my grades. I do, of course, backup the gradebook and print a copy.
Hi Wanda:
Sounds like your institution has adopted a sure fire method to at least inform your students of their progress. I'm sure you probably alsi share ideas, advice, and suggestions for improvement while you're at it.
This is also a great time to offer careing words, encouragement and support which sjow the student you care about their success.

We have a system in place where after every 2 exams we give the students a progress report. This means that there is no surprise at the end of the term.
Hi Hoang:
This is good. Sharing ways to improve or sufggestions and advice can be added to reinforce to the students the teacher care about their success. Worrds of encouragement and support are helpful as well.

Hi Teresa:
Well, we sure want to dispel any fears!
Frequent sharing of grades and earned points is important so that a student knows where they stand and have an opportunity to make corrections so it will be reflected in their grade. Waiting too long may not give that opportunity.
This also gives us an opportunity to offer encouragement and support, and caring words of advice and suggestions for improvemnent, which should demonstate to the students that their teacher is interested in their success.

Hi Bernie:
Rapid feedback is great and students appreciate getting their results quickly. This would also be true for grades and points earned in other areas too.

I use the testing as an additional learning tool, and usually have the test back in their had before leaving the room.
I make sure that the students know what they are getting in class right after each quiz and test.
So the student can see that he or she is passing.. The fear of not knowing how one is doing can be harmful. The student could start giving up the effort to do the work, simply because he/she may feel as if they are not doing well. With early course status the student can see what ever they are doing must be working, so they continue their style. If the grades are not up to par, then the student will know that something else needs to be done.
So they know where they stand in the class and are able to make improvements need be.
It obviously can keep the student focused and motivated. It also keeps them informed. I have had students who have thought they completed an assignment but simply forgot to turn it. I also think it is good for the instructor who can see patterns of systemic issues for an individual or the class. Instructors can also evaluate themselves based on the ongoing status updates to the students.
It keeps them modivated in the cource and gives them a sense of confidence
gives themn positive feed back and a goal to shoot for if they are haveing trouble
lets the student know how they are doing
