Hi Judy:

One thing to keep in mind is the idea of BALANCE when discussing or thinking about personality in the classroom. If there is too much of any personality style, be it too humorous, or too strict, etc., this may serve only to distract the student from a full understanding of the course material.

My personality conveys teamwork, inquisitiveness and perseverance-no surrender attitude when I facilitate the subject matter in mathematics. A team is better than one head motto, you may do mistakes, it's okey, go back and brainstorm with the team, then everybody owns the success of the team. In the end, precision.

My role of instructor is usually opposite of my personality outside the school. I am relatively quiet and shy outside the classroom. But in the classroom, I have to be outgoing and boisterous and work on engaging students from the first minute.

I tend to choose activities that keep the class working as a group on papers or projects. I try to teach to all types of learning styles by using different media avialable.

One of the ways that have been able to let my personality shine through to my class is through humor. I find that if I can laugh and be up in class it is catchy.... another point is when I laugh at myself in my examples or stories it seems to free up the students to be "real" about themselves too

Every class is a little different, as every instructor is different.
I try to use my personality to my advantage, but, sometimes your personality clashes with the students.
You need to feel out the class, ask questions, and try to get more information, then adjust to the differences we each have.

Your personality is important when teaching. If you are prepared, confident and excited the students know they will learn in the class. If you are rude, boring and unprepared students will feel short changed and sometimes become angry. In turn, they will act out.

My students know I am excited, prepared, focused and confident.

I really do believe that personality has a lot to do with your role as instructor. If you have an outgoing, welcoming personality and good attitude, the students are going to want to open up to you if they are having issues down the road. Thus will make it less likelier they will want to leave.
