Its tough to support every learning style in every class, I am at a trade school that focuses more on "hands on" lab classes. We do however incorporate lecture with lab, but there are days after lecture is complete that it is all hands on. I don't want to lose the students interest, I also assign nightly reading and work book assignments to keep all students ingaged.

Hi Pascale - Thanks for your post to the forum. You make an excellent point! Our students will sometimes need to adapt their learning styles in the workplace. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Although it is important to address the learning styles of every student,I think that it is also important to explain to the student that working on a different style of learning will increase their chance of success. As an example reading intructions before performing a procedure or before operating an equipment.

I have learned over the last year of teaching it is very important to have a variety of teaching methods.

So that they can retain and apply the most information.

It is very important the first day of class to establish the learning styles of your students. Education should be an exciting experience for the student and as a teacher it is very important that we reach out to them and make sure that we create that type of environment for the student. When students enjoy the way they are learning they are able to embrace the material.I like the idea of the assessment on the first day of class.

By supporting the learning styles of your students as an instructor you can get more feed back from more of the class that they are understanding or grasping what you are presenting in class that day.In other words you are reaching more students in the class room than just a few of them.

Hi Joseph- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job teaching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree with your approach. I find it best to use auditory, written, visual, and kinesthetic approaches for delivery of all instruction. Even visual learners will have benefit from the hearing and seeing the instruction. It is best to show a PowerPoint, talk about the subject and then have a student demonstrate the application. It also helps to remind the student to take notes.

Hi Jennifer - Thank for your post to the forum. You are definitly running an active learning classroom and are adapting your delivery to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It is important to reach all students preparing themselve for a profession.

Students need to be able to learn in their style of learning in order to fully grasp what is being presented to them. I try to mix lecture with PowerPoints, when I write information on the board I use multiple colors, I use handhouts, small group discussions, and will usually give my personal experience regarding something and then ask for others to share their personal experiences. I have found that by letting students know you a little bit on a personal level they share more about themeselves and their experiences, which in turn allows the teacher to even better understand where the student is coming from. I always have plenty of students willing to participate.

Hi Connie - I also teach mostly adults and was an adult student myself so I know how hard it can be. Your studednts certainly appreciate the extra effort that you make! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I teach at an adult vocational/technical school and we try to address the different learning styles in our classes whenever possible. It's hard enough for adults who have been out of school - sometimes for decades! - to come back to school and take classes. It helps to ease the anxiety if we mix it up a bit and try to arrange class activities to address the different styles and make everyone feel a little more welcome and secure.

By supporting the learning styles of your students you will increase not only their success level, but yours.

Hi Nicole- Thanks for your post to the forum. you are using a great mix of delivery styles with your diverse learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Wow Nicole - What a great mix of assesments that you are using- Bravo! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I teach at a similar type of school, and many of my classes are filled with creatives that learn by "hands on". Since most of the classes I teach are business related, I use a mixture of lecture with PowerPoints, class discussion, guest speakers, hands on projects, such as writing a business plan, as well as reading assignments and exams to assess the students. By addressing each learning style all of the student are able to feel comfortable and strong within at least one of these methods, and it encourages students to really shine in their prefered media.

Its important because every student deserves an education and not all students take in new information the same way. Students are individuals and need to be treated as such when teaching them new things.
