I go over the task sheet, and describe the tasks required. I also describe the tests that will be given during the course, as well as the penalties for late assignments.

Hi Christopher,
You certainly must do what you expect of your students because if you don't you will definitely hear about it.
Patricia

Hi Margaret,
Great quiz idea1 I like to really show them how important it is to understand course requirements by securing their signature.
Patricia

Requirements are made clear on the first day, plenty of time is taken on the first day of class going over the syllabus in detail. If there are any questions as we progress through the term I am accessible via e-mail, in-person, cell or home number.

Hi Sarah,
I tell them they should have asked for clarity before hand.
Patricia

The first day of class the syllabus is handed out. As the students settle into class, I ask each student to read it silently. Then, I present the syllabus to the class, covering each section verbally. I ask them to highlight pertinent/critical dates, grading criteria, objectives, and requirements. Afterwards, ask the students to assemble in a group of 4. I pass out 7 questions pertaining to the course requirements. The groups are scored. The top 3 scores are posted on the board. The winning group receives a free homework pass. At the end of the session, I ask each student to sign a brief paragraph, written by me, citing that he/she understands the syllabus and course requirements as presented.

I go over the syllabus at the beginning of each term. The students receive a copy and I challenge them to keep track of the objectives to make sure that they are learning everything they are supposed to. I also give a quiz on the syllabus at the end of the first class.

I read the sylabus and have the student read the same. I emphasize the important parts of the program- safety- shop rules- etc.. and also set down the rules for being on time and with all materials needed for the course. I expect them to have this ready when they come into class. I also set the example by being in the class and ready before they arrive

Using the given syllabus.

Hi Mark,
Reviewing requirements certainly add clairity, and therefore there are no gray areas.
Patricia

Hi Loyd,
Explaining really helps clarify things instead of leaving it to the student to read an interpret on their own.
Patricia

I go over the course outline in great detail explaining what we will be covering in each chapter, and go over assignments, grading, and homework. I also explain to my students if they miss a quiz or homework assignment they have 1 week to make it up or they will receive a zero for that quiz or homework assignment.

By issuing a syllabus to each student and take some time to explain everything that is expected of the student. Make sure the requirements and expectations are clear.

Students need to know what is expected of them and when it is due. Reviewing the course requirements with the class should eliminate questions and suprizes later in the program

I do spend time going over the syllabus on the first day as well as subsequent days, especially in relation to project due dates.

I make sure that each student has a course syllabus at the beginning of class, go over expectations for the class and allow students to discuss any concerns.

I want my students to succeed but I also believe in personal responsibility. I believe completing tasks without reminders fosters organization and personal responsibility.

Melissa

My course requirements were discussed during the first class meeting and are listed in the syllabus. I remind the students during almost every class meeting in some way about them. My question is, what do you do about students who still say they didn't understand the requirements?

Hi Sherri,
I like the 6-pack method. It sounds like this is such an effective course and extremely helpful.
Patricia

Hi Aldgenette,
I thoroughly go over the syllabus with the students and allow for questions. I also have know instructors to give a quiz on the syllabus.
