I believe showing activities and upcoming work builds excitement and anticipation for the students. The same reasoning goes for talking about the syllabus. Students want to know what to anticipate.
It helps them to be prepared and to know what is expected of them.
On the first day of the class we give our students a binder (class hand book) with projects students will be working on in the upcoming course. The course information binder contains the necessary information students need to complete the projects. Also students can see how the course applies to their future career.
Showing examples of work in class from previous students and professionals in the field is very important. This gauges the student into the right direction to know what is expected of them and gives them an idea as to why they will be learning from this course. Examples of final projects would be a great way to convey all smaller learning lessons now combined into one final package.
This helps them actually see what it is that they will be doing. By having an example, they will know what they are expected to do and how it should look when they are done.
I have sometimes had various students read out their answer, alternating around the room so each student can hear what an expected answer is required.
Giving them a visual example helps students to recognize whether or not they actually understand the assignment. Often times when I do not show examples to students, they are way off base and the finished work that they turn in is completely irrelevant.
It helps them to understand the course and what is required of them learners.
Hi Kate,
Great points! I even include a failing and an average example as well.
Patricia
It helps to get them excited about the class.
So they are prepared for the coarse.
Teacher are always exempl and students are always interested about the teacher skill to be able to duplicate and copy his skill
It is important to show samples for several reasons:
1) It provides a clear illustration of what is expected of students
2) It helps the "visual" learner to be able to see a sample
3) It is a good motavator --- for example, if you can show students some shining examples from the last class it provides a benchmark for students to try and do even better!
Hi Trinidad,
Showing examples of work is a super motivator as well as a great confidence builder.
Patricia
It is motivational. Motivation increases learning. The more examples given the more confidence it builds. It shows releveance and with relevence, comes gained attention. To sum this up. The more examples = motivation = attention, relevence, confidence and satisfaction
It is helpful to show your students examples of the work they will be doing in the upcoming course in order to show them what they will be learning. I believe that it is also a good motivator for them to see examples of work that they will learn.
Hi Maria,
Showing examples of students work has been a very pleasant experience every time I've done this. Students really do benefit from this in a BIG way.
Patricia
Hi Scott,
Absolutely! Students need to be introduced as much to the real world as possible.
Patricia
It will help them see how the course is relevant to the work that they will be doing when they get into the field which should in turn increase motivation and focus.
The student will be more prepared for the course.
