When you show the student an example of the work they will be doing in the course they are more engaged. Some students are visual learners and by seeing and example it will clarify the course details. It also brings forth an open forum session to questions and answers.

Hi Robert,
Students like having guidelines. Great clarity is added whenever examples are shown.

I shared the project of the outstanding student to the new group and this helps them a lot:-)

Showing the students example of the work they will be completing in the upcoming course will supply the students with logic and rationale for the course content. Students need a reason to learn, they are looking to see that the information they are learning can be used and applied to their career after their courses are complete.

It creates a standard or a guideline for students and helps students to understand the instructors expectations.

The beginning of each course I give short examples of what to expect. I encourage students to begin using as many of these examples as they can. I usually give them written work to get them on the right track and give each other feed back in class.

Hi Scott,
This is exactly what we want to do is to WOW our students. Students generate a great sense of excitement whenever they see and understand how the course applies to their career.
Patricia

It is a huge benefit to the students to understand that the instruction course is pertinent to their career education. I show examples and the students are wowed. They know now that they can put the knowledge to work in a real world environment

So they will know what is expected of the instructor and course objective

I feel that providing an example gives students more of an idea of what is expected of them. If the example is adequately explained to the class, it will greatly cut down on student questions as well as student anxiety regarding an assignment.

Showing them gives them direct input and clear direction on how they are supposed to complete the work assigned to them.

This also makes the student feel more secure in that they are doing things the correct way.

It helps them know more about thr course

Giving examples also makes the student know what quality of work is expected. What an A, B, or C work looks like. It prepares the student with the knowledge of how much work is involved and expected.

Hi Dorianne,
You need to fully explain how they would benefit from being shown an example.

Shows what you deem to be good work

Hi Angela,
Students really get to see the end product by being shown an example.
Patricia

I also struggle with this, but do remember as an undergrad that examples were helpful in that I had an idea of what was expected, rather than confronted by an empty page/sketchbook/etc. However, I also have some difficulty as a new instructor of having student work examples since I have not taught many courses …

This will help the student to prepare for the lesson they will have in class. It will show them what is expected of them so they can start to prepare. It help the students think ahead.

It will set a standard on what is expected of them.
