to prepare them

Excellent point. When students see what is expected of them, they will be much more capable of relaxing and understanding what to do.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Examples provide the format and in many cases the content for expected work during the course.

Hi Heather,
Students need to know exactly what is expected of them so that they can do well. Examples help add clarity.

Hi Kathleen,
Provide the students with detail steps/guidelines to accomplishing the project.
Patricia

One of our school courses has the students solve problems such as to figure reasonable start up cost for a new business. The idea is for them to make adjustments as the effects of costs upon pricing and cash flow. The students are encouraged to work in groups. The problem with showing an example is to give the answer. What would be some ways to clarify the assignment? The process is as important as the outcome.

Hi Douglas,
It also eases fear, and it builds confidence.

Hi Amy,
This is an excellent field that requires the use of a lot of visuals.
Patricia

In Cosmetology visuals are very important because it give students a foundation to build upon. Being creative is very much a part of what this field is about.

It is help to the student because it will give them some insight as far as what is required of them and what to expect to achieve. Also, it will ease the tension and make them relax in course.

It helps students prepare for successfully meeting the course requirements and expectations. And each person has his/her own perception of something so despite how detailed instructions may be, without a specific example there isn't anything concrete and universal to pull together the different perceptions. I often like to share student examples anonymously as those examples are more appropriately level accurate too.

Yes; seeing examples, both good and bad, gives students a baseline, allowing them to set standards. They learn what to avoid and what to strive for--great insight on how to move forward.

It is very important. You students need to see how the work that they are doing is going to be accomplished. If they see exanples good and bad it will help them to prepare for the work they will have to do.,

So the students can see what and how the work should look like. Giving them examples can only help them to acheive the right and accurate work that is being saked of them. Examples are always a great way to let your students know what is expected of them

What a great point. In many courses I felt intimidated and asked myself how will I ever do that. As an instructor I know I go far beyond explaining what any of my instructors ever did based on my experience.

Possibly get them excited in a project or method they may not have used in past assignments plus give a teaser of what is to come!

For the visual learners it gives them an concrete example of what is expected; it also gives some sort of idea of a "reward" or finished product to aim for.

Hi Anthony,
I also like to show examples of unacceptable work.
Patricia

Hi Frederick,
Showing examples can improve one's understanding, but if that does not get it, we must try other ways to get students to understand.
Patricia

Allowing students to see what is expected of them gives them a better sense of the course and what they will be doing. Just be sure not to only show examples that are perfect- this sets the student up for trying to reach perfection and possibly feeling like they can't do the work expected for the course. Give a variety of examples, with different grades.
