Hi Darrell,
Students need to know what is unacceptable/acceptable, and these things should be shared on Day 1.

Hi Antonio,
The syllabus is a great tool to provide clarity!

Patricia Scales

Hi Patricia and Class,

I think that in an online class students can feel overwhelmed with the course requirements. Students may be used to a face to face classroom where delivery is presented in an auditory manner. I think that the key to making course requirements clear to students is to re-phrase and reiterate. The syllabus is the most important single document in a class. Course requirements should be visible and formatted for maximum visibility. I like to highlight my syllabus so that students can understand what material is particularly important to their success.

I find that e-mails and Announcements with helpful reminders of upcoming deadlines and expectations can make the Course Requirements clearer. I think that a FAQ list in the classroom can also help. This sets up the mood in the classroom as anticipatory of student concerns. I sometimes convert my expectations also in graph or table form. This way a visual learner may appreciate the information in a new format. Finally marked up sample student submissions can also show expectations and examples of them being met.

Best

I will use the Syllabus to make the course requirements clear for the students and I will give them a calender that will have in detail what we are doing for each class day, when exams will be, when clinical days will be, when projects are due, etc. We will discuss course requirements in class and make sure students have a clear understanding of them.

Thanks

on the first day of class we discuss the class sylllabus in detail so that all students understand what I except, and what they except from me.

course requirements are made clear to my students through a course syllabus.

Hi Peggy,
Great ideas, especially the visual on the bullentin board. Students need quick/easy access to help them along the way.

Patricia Scales

By going over the course syllabus and elaborating on each section, should help make course requirements clear for students. However, sometimes there is a need to revisit parts of the syllabus with the students beyond just the first day. I also keep a posted copy on the class bullentin board for easy access to the student(s).

Begining the first day it is very important that the requirements are clearly understood by the students. the syylabus and the lesson plans are very important as the set the standard on what is going to be taught and what is expected not only from the student but also from the instructor

I plan from day one what will be covered in the class. I like to have the assignments written down for the students from day one. I also like to discuss my class expectations from day one.

Do you also include a clender with test dates and asignments due dates?

I generally spend the first hour of every new class discussing the syllabus with my students. During this time, we also talk about student expection, as well as my responsibility to each of them.

The first class meeting, I'll announce and briefly introduce myself. Then, ask the students to do the same. By doing this, it makes the students in class comfortable and friendly.

Then I go over the course requirements and provide a dicussion session over the course.

Thanks,

Hi Teresa,
You do a fine job in getting your students prepared for the graded assessment. Continue to produce quality graduates.

Patricia Scales

I am a substitute clinical instructor so on the day they practice for their graded Assessments, I review everything on the written assessment, demonstrate it and have them practice it. We review by reading the Assessment requirements aloud, me verbalizing them, me demonstrating them and the students performing them. On the day of the Assessment students are given time to practice prior to taking the actual assessment and I again do all the above with them being able to ask questions and me being able to openly guide them. This sets them up for the best possibility of success in the actual graded Assessment.

I place them in the Syllabi and I also write the dailys on the board.

I give them lecture, power point presentation, diagrams. If they can't still get it I don't mind repeating my lectures again. For slow learner students I offer tuturial after class.

Hi Gayle,
Great references. Your students can not use the excuse they did not know. You have double coverage.

Patricia Scales

Hi Robert,
A question/answer section is very effective after presenting the requirements.

Patricia Scales

I not only use the course syllabus, but I draw up another course outline explaining the exact criteria and expectations. The students keep these to refer to.
