Students with disabilities

I thought that this was a very good course as it really helped me to understand how to prepair myself for students with disabilities in my class, I have had a student with a mobility disabilitiy in a class in the past and was really not prepaired for it!  I know feel that I have some knowledge about what i can do the next time to be more prepaired.

ED 115 Soft Skills for Instructors

I thought this class was actually very interesting.  I liked how it broke down the soft skills into categories.  I was aware of the people skills necessary to relate to people but thinking of these in conjunction with workplace behaviors actually added a new dimension in thinking about these people skills.  I lumped people skills into what makes soft skills not thinking about how workplace skills added to people skills made up soft skills.  Those were new concepts for me which I think enhanced my understanding of the term soft skills.  I also very much appreciated the 4 tips to… >>>

WOW! This course was truly enlightening and exciting.  From incredible edible cell practice, the dot game, bingo and more. I was quite excited and ready to implement some of these great ideas to get my students engaged.

I have created my own Jeopardy in PowerPoint for anatomy classes, medical terminology and even some of our health insurance classes (because we know how exciting health insurance can be?) :) - Any rate, I found it interesting how competitive my students were and how this exercise extremely showed an increased improvement on their finals.

So now, I have more ideas to start… >>>

Students with Disabilities

This was a good course to help me assist students with any kind of disabililty, whether they have an accomidation plan or not. I have worked with students in the past that have had hearing, and vision problems, now I can assist them by keeping an open mind, and see where they may need assistance.

Defining Learning Disabilites 106

Most of the student that I have worked with  a Learning  Disabilites were not easy to recognize  because this has been a lifelong struggle and their reading skills were great  but their testing was poor. This course has been great for me

Addressing Student Discontent

How do we address student dissatisfaction in the classroom? Should we just listen to what the student says in the classroom? How about if our authority is challenged in the classroom?

A student can call us ignorant, incompetent, and various other disparaging comments that could affect our self-esteem and complicate the process of learning for other students. This is a difficult situation to handle especially if the dissatisfied student excels academically. Are you intimidated? What are your strategies to homogeneize the atmosphere in your classroom? Should this situation be treated separately?

ED104 Class Management

I taught at the middle school level for 32 years and now I am teaching at a career college. This course was a great way to show me how to manage a classroom of adult learners versus middle schoolers.

This was a great course!  I was happy to see an emphasis on the "soft skills" students need to achieve success in the field.  I also love the idea of pretesting before a course to find out the base level knowledge of the class before planning the course or unit.  Very good ideas!

Enhancing Learning for All Types of Students

Students have to first buy into the course at the beginning and it is especially difficult if you are teaching a course that is not part of the core curriculum of the student's major.  The instructor in those cases needs to motivate students to become engaged in the learning objectives by connecting their career choice to and applying it with real-world examples of how that class will increase the chances of success in their chosen career field.

Soft skills are becoming the foundation of the learning enviroment; a firm foundation should have been learned in a students upbringing but in this day and age that is not necessarily the case. Having the patience to incorpoate these skills into the training lessons will give the students the best chance for future success.

Soft Skills are Important

Soft skills are extremely important. Most companies can train you on the hard skills. They really can't train you on the soft skills. This is why I believe that it should be taught in the career schools.

I learned a great deal about Testing and improving students questions and  responses .

I will study this further on my own and apply the different learning style techniques.

ED106

This course was very good reminder of how to motivate students  and to help them to retain the concepts they are learning. I think at that the college level, we sometimes forget that our stuents still have old learning disabilities that we need to help them with.  This course did a well job of reminding me what those learning disabilities are and how to deal with them.

ED108

ED108 Was very helpful with information that I can use in my classroom.  How information is processed and the  decoding and recoding was very informative.  I intend to try more and varying techniques in my upcoming classes to see if I can help my students learn and retain more information.

Preparing Students

This was an excellent course to set the standard for what is expected when preparing students for college life.  There are many aspects that were new to me and I am sure to incorporate these into my dealings with new students. I learned about what I was doing right and just how much I was doing wrong. Looking forward to applying this in the class room.

ED102

Excellent course! This course offered some great ideas for instructional content and development. In addition, the information superceded general ideas that I had regarding retention rates. I am looking forward to applying some of these applications in my next courses.

Course relavency to modern inner city students.

One thing that could help make this course content relevant to many of us, is to have a seperate section relating to and written by someone that teaches inner city students. I teach in a technical scholl and it is a completely different world teaching "College students" with a 2nd or 3rd grade reading level, no math skills, and proper grammer is not even a vague concept. Most of these students are actually smart (especially street smart) but have no academic skills of any kind. You cannot lower your expectations but the instuctional style is not the same as a regular college… >>>

Trying to provide a student centered approach to higher education and usinig an online platform to do so is task that requres patience, passion, and imagination. In this class, I have learned new ways to improve my effectiveness as an instructor. Using a course framework, having a dynamic syllabus, and using grading rubrics are all methods that are useful for me to help my students achieve academic success.

I think that this class gave me some insight into the concerns of teaching to students with specialized needs.  When you take this into consideration with different learning styles, the class has to have a more fluid approach.  The communication between the student and the teacher becomes critical.  I let my students know that if they need accommodations to see me in private.  My schools policy is it must be documented otherwise the only thing I can do is approach the class with different teaching styles and tutorials.

I have  2 questions about taping lectures.  Could this violate the right of privacy… >>>
