Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Developing engaging presentations

Our students demand a higher level of engagement than when I was a student. They also respond to revelance to the real-world.

Impression

I feel that the most important part of the first class is to make a positive impression. Make sure you are on time and prepared for class to start on time. This sets the pace for the class and the students are clear as to what you expect.

Motivation

I like to play games with my students. It increases their motivation and it keeps their attention. This has been effective for me in the past.

Career Goals

It is important to help your student set career goals and learn how to understand the goals. Make sure they are reachable and reward when goals are met.

Strategies

It is important to have instructional stategies and be prepared to adjust depending on your students learning styles. This will help both you and your students.

assign chapters

have students share what they learned from each chapter

Encourage student to ask questions

In class we should ask students to ask questions related to their personal subject related experiences.

Adding diversity in your method of teaching depending upon students mo

I think an instructor should adopt the method which suits the student as the goal of Instructor is to make students learn

Wait Time

ED 114 has made me aware of my need to allow slower students the opportunity to have more time to answer the question. Also, my teaching can be more productive if I incorporate more open questions. I now feel that open questions allows the student to better express them selves and apply what they have read.

staying creative as an instructor

keeping yourself current in the field of your study, and thinking outside the box keeps you updated and current. on going education for the support of growth and creativity is essential in learning and staying creative. being inspired everyday makes the creative side improve and grow stronger.

Being a Motivator

Inspiring your students everyday, and keep them wondering what tomorrow will bring is essential. Changing up your daily teaching routine will keep them wanting more. Add in activities and energizers to inspire your students when they are feeling tired or not motivated. This is your spotlight so shine like diamond.

Experience vs Knowledge

I have been teaching for about 7 years now and realize that no matter how much experience you have as an instructor, you must continue to improve your knowledge of the subject you are teaching.

Active Learning

Active best mimics how people really learn...people learn by doing. You didnt see pictures of how to ride a bike or have someone describe it to you, you rode the bike to learn how to ride a bike. Give the learners what they need to learn...activity!

Questions

It's good to have confimation that the procedures used in the classroom to ask questions to the students is the proper way to do it.

Expectation Management

A good tool that I have used is to group students together on the first day of class and have them identify the top 5 expectations they have for each other. Being prompt and having succinct comments always comes up.

Textbooks

So what really consitutes a textbook? Does it have to have an ISBN number? What is the source it needs to come from?

VARK

I've always liked Fleming's VARK to help provide guidance for teaching to meet all the learning styles in a given class. I think sometimes it is overcomplicated when in fact it is easy, and quite necessary, to do so.

Making a Positive First Statement

We have all been members of a class in which the instructor rushes in last minute and leaves immediately as th class is over. As a student this diminishes your learning experience and sets a class expectation that dedication is not valued nor rewarded in that particular class.

Planning and Prep

In regards to my class I must make sure that all the boats are fueled up,have all the necessary safety equipment on board, and hbe the mehanical pre operations checks completed before the students arrive. This requires the instructors to arrive more then one hour before the students but it has the added benefit of allowing the instructors the appropriate warm up time they need to effectivly teach the course.

Culinary Labs

This post is to get feedback on refining the grading matrix. Looking at competency objectives, what are good implementation strategies?
