Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Foundation of a good first impression

There are so many factors that should to be taken in consideration when we want to create a good impression; the most important would probably be: Be professional Know your students Show them that you care about their education. How we execute them will determine how successful the educational experience will be.

Prepare to the unexpected

Careful planning would facilitate the delivery of the content knowledge. However they will always be unforeseen situations which must be addressed with an assertive approach. Knowing your students, setting clear rules, its punishments and rewards will help instructor to better handle unanticipated issues in the classroom. What should be done when these procedures do not pay off?

Addressing diversity by choosing role models with diffrent nationaliti

As our demographics become more and more diverse it is crucial that we incorporate scientific data gathered by scientist and doctors from different nationalities and background so that students feel represented and motivated to learn. How relevant would this be to accomplsh academic achievement?

Adapting

I have had a few students with disabilities of which required an IEP. However, with encouragement, dedication, addition time and help each one has succeeded.

Diverse Learners

It can be challenging for instructors who have different levels of learning, comprehension, and communication. However, I have had a lot of success with those who are struggling by having independent group reviews and study slots to help students overcome their obstacles.

Groups

Groups are such a great way to get students involved and yet take the pressure off they may feel during a class discussion. However, it is definitely something that must be monitored to make sure that all students are participating not just a few. Encouraging them to switch roles is a great way to help with effective participation.

Eye Contact

I think it is so important for students to make eye contact with each student rather than one. It is, afterall, a class discussion.

Great to be prepared

Be prepared and also have a back up , just in case things dont go your way.

Students who answer wrong

Oneof the courses I teach, has a lot of information at students in a short period of time and I am constantly asking review questions, trying to relate information. What is the best way to respond when a student responds incorrectly. I do tend to thank the student for offering a response but say that it was an incorrect response and explain why, and ...but I do not want to make the student feel bad for having a wrong answer.

Developing as an Instructor

I find that it is important to continue developing your technical skills as an instructor. After I completed graduate school, I realized that building on my expertise in my field of study was necessary but not sufficient. I would not have been able to make a living as a college instructor had I not taken courses on Blackboard/ WebCt and Angel. This allowed me to find employment in one of the fastest areas of growth - online education. Although I majored in the Social Sciences, these technical skills allowed me to remain in my field of study. Ricardo Richards

Incorporating Your Instructional Style Into Online Learning

My most recent challenge has been to incorporate my instructional style into teaching online classes. I've added podcasts, videos, my own lecture material (not canned ones from the publisher) and offered my students times to meet me and study with me on campus. How do all of you incorporate your unique style into the online learning environment?

Working with students with a disability

Students with disability tend to fall between the crack. If you know the signs of the disability you will be able to catch and help that student.

Group projects

Group projects are good to help the students that have trouble engaging in class. But be careful for those students that work well on their own and do not like working in groups.

Eye contact

By using eye contact with the students it let the student know that you are intuned with them or letting them know you are watching them.

The "New Guy"

Getting over the stigma of being the "New Guy" teacher is probably something many have gone through. I will be teaching my first classes ever in a few weeks. Just wondering if there are any suggestions as to how to come out of the gate at full speed and to gain the trust of the students quickly.

Using alternative assessments

What are other ways that can be used to asses diverse populations?

Syllabus

How to plan an effective syllabus?

T/F questions

these questions are easy to form for instructor, but are not easy for students. Because they have only 50% chance to win or lose the points

Students Participation

Experienced instructor should use the easiest way to make as many of his/her student to participate in class discussions.

Kensthetic Learners

Kensthetic learners are professional using there hands, but mostly cannot comprehend from textbooks. They love to touch objects instead of spend time to read the materials.
