Covering Content on the first day

The way one of my courses is set up I have to cover 2 chapters on the first day (and they are tested over it the second meeting). I struggle with using enough time to establish a good classroom environment and still comple two chapters. They are usually very overwhelmed. I did put part of the first exam online this time so they could use their book and get a feel for the style of my exams. Any other suggestions.

Adult Attention Span and Learning Styles

I teach four hour blocks at a health care trade school. This is really a challenge, especially when you consider that an adult's attention span is under eighteen minutes. As a result, I really try to focus on designing lesson plans that consider learning styles and that build in a lot of active learning strategies. For adult learners, connecting the learning to their future career path and building in active learning that incorporates learning styles is critical. Often, I view myself as a facilitator more than as an instructor. I facilitate mastery learning using research on learning styles and active learning.

Review Safety Precautions

I really never thought about adding Safety Precautions to my course syllabus. Logically, I am responsible for knowing the safety precautions in regards to fire, tonado, earthquake, or other emergencies. I am well versed in these safety procedures, but it never occurred to me to go ahead and add them into my couse syllabus. I will definitely add this heading to my syllabus for future courses.

How to handle students who "know it all"

some students don't like to be told how to do certain things. How can you word it so they know you are only in it for them to lesrn not to judge them.

Professionalism

What makes a good Professional?

Maslow

It can be helpful to review Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as it pertains to the classroom. Students will want their physical needs met first (chair, desk, bathroom, food, etc. Once those are met they will be concerned with safety needs and so forth.

Contextual Teaching and Learning

This is a very effective way to teach because it engages the student. We all want our learning to be relevant. We want it to mean something to us. We want it to be applicable to a real-life situation. If this is the case, our learning and retention increase dramatically.

Evaluating success

It is some time diffcult to determine students success especially a student that is an introvert

creating their own study guide

Before I start a new topic I have the students answer the bullet points on the overview page and write down the page number where they found their answers. This will ensure that they have opened their books and the page reference is a good study guide.

teaching aids

I have found that the use of aides draws interest in a lecture by showing with a subject that is being discuss. Student tend to bring up more questions,do you agree this method is good or does serve as a crutch?

Nice to know there's a method to my madness

I have luckily received great evaluations from students because of my usage of slides. I always wondered why it was so welcomed, especially since I make my adult learners take a lot of notes from my slides... but thanks to this I know why... they are learning by listening, seeing the slides, and writing my notes... appealing to every type of learner! I think as a word of caution though, reading directly off of them is extremely boring... slides should be used as a guide not as a script.

Teaching and motivation of your students

It is important to have experience to aid in your teaching. Otherwise, its just textbook knowledge in theory alone. I use my experience and visual aids to help my students learn better and to help encourage a successful completion of the class.

first day

what I have to do to be relax the first day o the class ?, for me is very hard .

Meeting my class on the first day

The first day of class can be stressful, painful and nervousness all around. The best way to break the ice is to get to know each other. I draw a big + [plus] on my board and after introducing myself, I asked each of my students to come to the front of class. They will introduce themselves and write their name and reason for taking the class. I ask them to tell us their expectations as well. In the end, this is a good exercise in networking and breaking the ice. Good deal all around!

developing a planning

I think the better way to orientated your students is developing a good study plan were they can find everything that they need for the class.

motivational

I'am a new instructor and I will like to know what is the best way to motivate the student in the classroom .

Pygmalion effect

This is very true..From the start of the class the students that I think will not do well..don't do well and the students that I believe will be the most successful are...This really makes me think about my perception and attitude towards students!!

BEST WAY TO LEARN

Hands down, in my experience the best way to teach students something is to let them physically try it on their own...Hands on training has worked the best for me.

ATTENTION GETTERS

I always try to put homework assignments on different colored paper, because it not only makes the assignment more noticeable and students are less likely to forget that they have the assignment but pastel colors are also found to be more calming which will be more of a motivation to tackle the assignment and get it done. I think the calming color gives off a non threatining vibe to the project.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK

I have found that group activities can get off track really quick..students will start talking about personal topics and outside of school activities.. Just a quick walk around the room and asking each group if I can answer any questions they may have will usually get them back on track and a reminder of how much time they have left to complete the task does the trick 99% of the time.
