Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Group participation

I find that putting students in small groups helps the weaker students and brings out the leaders in the class.

Flaoting Around the classroom

I prefer floating around the classroom as I lecture. I believe the students feel more involved in a discussion rather than just listening to a lecture. It also helps keep the students attention.

First class problems

I find that my first day of class is spent overcoming the impression made by the last instructor. My students progress through the technical program as a group and when they get to my class, they are furious with the school and the previous instructors. I have to encourage them to keep attending by showing them the final outcome (being successful in their new chosen field). I know that when they leave my classes they are well on their way to achieving their goals!

Instructional Style

When a new term starts, I make my expectatios and class rules known to my students, in writing, along with the syllabus. I provide an opportunity for questions and check for understanding. There are no surprises, the boundaries are clear. I do not deviate throughout the course. My particular method of teaching changes according to my student population. One of the best graduate courses I have ever taken is "Styles of Teaching". The course addressed different learning methods for different personalities. Each class and each student are unique; as instructors, we must learn to adapt.

Life experiences and examples in the classroom

I have found that using real life examples and telling stories that relate to the content motivates and encourages students. They can relate to real life experiences and it makes them feel that their goal is obtainable.

Helping students with learning disabilities

I have found the best way to help a student with a learning disability is to try a variety of different methods in helping the student process the information and stay on task and also finding out what methods worked best for the student in the past and using the same of similar methods.

Why Group Learning is important.

I think splitting students up into random groups is a great way for students to get to know each other and hear the opinions and ideas of other classmates that they may not normally connect with or socialize with.

Eye Contact

It is very important to maintain eye contact with a student while he/she is talking to you. It lets them know that you are paying attention to what they are saying and that what they are saying is important to you.

test

Students have a tendacy of requesting what they want on a Test. I find that some student do not like a challenge.

Quiz and Test

My style is to give a quiz on a weekly basis. This give me an idea as to where the class/students are in understanding the lecture, course and assignments. After each quiz, I review to identify if most of the students did not answer the same question correctly. I then, discuss in detail each question students miss or did not understand.

QUESTION IN THE CLASSROOM

I take the question and answer time in class to help me identify the strength and weakness within the student or students. Helps me prepare a lecture for the next day.

Lectures

When delivering a lecture, is it recommended to pause from the lecture after 15 min to recapture the attention of the students?

Getting started

Is it recommended to give daily quizzes on the material learned the day before?

Learning Objectives

Can a learning objective be too broad?

Motivation

What would be a good example of being a great motivator for students who have a hard time on test taking?

Active Learning

While teaching a class, I constantly try and involve the student in the learning process. For example, while presenting a demonstration, I have the students follow along on their computers, thus giving them a hands-on learning experience instead of watching and listening the entire time.
