MY usual first day

As a teacher in college that use the quadrant system; I have to meet new student every one and a half months, that means I meet many studenta for the first time. Usually I introduce myself at the beginnig then. after letting the students to introduce them self I try to make some joke about my life as a student, show them how beautiful and interesting is college life despite the stress of studying, I would use some examples of how the science I'm teaching apply to some popular movies, like " the whole nine yards" when I teach dental assistants, honestly I do not try to overplan my first day I try to go with the flow and listen to the students then connecting their concern with the course.

Working within a corporate written syllabus

I work for a career college where are syllabi are written by other people. On the one hand this is helpful because it clearly lays out the objectives they are seeking to cover, but on the other hand it is necessary to make constant adjustments to the syllabus to accommodate the differences in classes and paying attention to their individual needs. I find myself using the syllabus as a guideline more than as a road map. I don't want to downplay its importance but I also trust my judgement once I have taught a class a few times to anticipate objectives that need more time or less time.

Active Learning Method

Before I begin a lecture/discussion, I begin a general discussion that incorporates the subject that I am about to begin, the students do not realize that I am gauging what they know about the subject before hand. I let them explain how they think that a certain process is done letting all the students add ideas as to how this process is done. I ask critical questions as the discussion progresses to make sure that they are incorporating all essential elements that must be considered. This peaks their interest so that when I start the lecture they can recognize if their thinking was on the right track!

Syllabus

At my school, most of the syllabi are canned, although we can modify them to some extent. Is it acceptable to add short addendums to the syllabus to highlight specific instructor expectations?

Instructional Style

Can instructional styles be learned, even though most teachers are comfortable with one dominant style?

selecting supplemental material

I feel that nowadays the access to supplemental material through the internet gave a big push for the educational process, but one of the major problems I faced when I ask the students to make a presentation is their negligence of the proper resources to take from. usually they follow the first google link appears on the subject, it seem that the more credible resources are more difficult to browse than the commercial sites

HELPING WITH LEARNING DISABILLITY

Students are embarrased about their disability and will not talk about it they want to be normal like everyone else it's up to us as instructors to identify the problem and work with them to help them suceed.

We need to help the students stay focus on their goal while they ar facing their chanellage of reading or learning english.

GROUP DISCUSSION

Help students to form a bond with each other and to get different learning styles.

using life experience

life experience with success motivates students to move forwards.get more skilled.it also can be used to motivates others. instructors can use the life experience of one students to motivates others.

group learning

it is always good students should work in a group to learn a specific skill.instructors also need to develop the skill of making an effective group that will work together and watch them effective learner.

managing the class

to manage a class instructors needs to be prepared about the subjects. also needs to make all students to be focused. bring their attention to the subject matter.use examples and other objects to keep students focused.so instructors needs to be trained and updated knowledge. max knowledge is one of them.

Plan Classes To Engage Not To Impress

As I reviewed the Harvard Business School instructor I was very impressed. He was down to earth, was professional in his address to us, “seasoned instructors” and delivered an important message. Don't try and impress students allow them to express themselves and showcase their learning tools. If you come across as a "know it all" students will not appreciate you. They want to know that you have life experiences that make you normal but skilled, that you have made mistakes and relate to their current challenges. Don't teach to impress. Teach to engage!

Supporting Students Through Non Traditional Technology

I have several students that are struggling with life challenges. They have housing, financial and family issues. At least once a week, I will text a student and give them words of encouragment. I personally feel that our job is to meet learners where they are in today's ever changing technological world. Do you agree? If so, what non-traditional measures have you taken to reach out to your students .... to ensure success?

IEP

Do some career college students come with IEPs?

Hearing Issues

I don't know sign language, and one of my students is hard of hearing. How should I best approach this?

Student Groups

Should an instructor have groups chosen before the students have a chance to self-choose?

Review

I review subject matter as we teach it. Before we move on i like to get the students to answer some questions. If they dont have it we stay on that topic for a while longer.
