Job accomplished

when you are prepared facing your student you can do your job successfully.

Focus on the course

Giving more information on the course how well that course is important student can be show more interest.

Testing

Make sure tests a valid and reliable. Many of our tests are created for our deparment, and they do not always measure the content. I have to either supplement the course material or delete the question from the test.

Styles of Learning

I love it when students first realize what style of learning they prefer. It awakens them, and allows them to understand that there is nothing "wrong" with them. They realize that they are unique.

Greetings

Greet EVERY student daily...they will remember and RECOGNIZE you always if you remember them. Believe me, I have been in education for over 20 years and I have students stop me in malls, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. It's good to know that they remember you.

Planning and Preparation

When planning for class it's good to use Bloom's Taxonomy. Bloom's helps an instructor to make sure he or she is using the higher level thinking and instructional skills. Incorporating activities that use analysis, application, and evaluation are important for adult learners.

Love Your Subject..Love Your Students

Over the years, I have found many educators in love with their subject area. However, they are not in love with the students they serve. In fact, some instructors are "afraid" of the students they serve. It is because of this fear, instructors are ineffective. Fall in love with your students and watch your love of your subject matter come alive. Leea Power

Positive Teaching.

The Instructor is reponsible for providing a positive environment for learning and engaging the students.

Prove your expertise

When I was a student, I always wondered, "Why should I listen to this teacher?" I feel like this same attitude has pushed into the way I teach. Although I feel like calming students nerves is extremely important, I think that proving your experience and explaining why you are a professional in this subject is extremely important. When you tell students of your experience and where you have been, it will allow them to understand that what they are learning does cross over into the real world. Ron Stefanski MBA

Learner Activites

I picked up a sample of student activities previously in these seminars:paper planes! I love this excercise, it demonstartes leadership ability, ability to follow directions and it is not allways the best candidate who becomes the leader...Just like in real life!

Followup Questions

One of the most effective ways I learn new material is to ask myself questions after studying the material. Chances are, if I can answer swiftly and clearly I know I got it! I do the same thing with the students.

My Instructional Style - It has had positive feedback so far!

I am brand new when it comes to being an adjunct instructor but I consistently have gotten compliments from my students. My theory about teaching is molded from many different personal experience. 1) I attended an online college for my Bachelors 2) I am self taught in the subject I am teaching 3) I always went to school full-time while working full-time I think the above three variables make me very unique in my teaching style because I have seen everything from the students perspective. As I said, I attended an online college so I understand the required course load and I can sympathize with them about being stressed for time. I feel that being self taught helps because I have a true passion for the subject and I think that comes through in my lectures. Students have complimented me mainly because I will explain a subject in the text terms, and then I simplify and repeat it to them in a much less confusing way. This is nice because it basically repeats everything twice, but i don't think it is redundant as it reinforces the main points. I feel that my third unique characteristic helps because I realize what organization is required in order to be successful as a student. In my experience, explaining everything twice and ensuring that the students "get it" is key. I take the time to always remind students I am open if they have questions and it seems like thus far they have appreciated my teaching style. -Ron Stefanski MBA

It's my style, you can use it

Your instructional style is of professional and personal experience. I strive to meet the criteria within our college policies and rules to help our students succeed.

Transcultural Educators

I think that this should be information taught and given to every instructor prior to teaching. Just as nurses are trained in transcultural lifestyles and needs, as educators this should be something we learn also. It would broaden not only our minds as educators but our minds as individuals

Attention Spans.

Growing up I had learning issues myself. It as hard for me to sit in the chair for hours on end listening to the teacher talk about the lessons of the day. She then gave me the option to stand at my desk or in the back of the room to listen to her. It made a great difference and my grades got better. How says you have to sit to learn.

Lazy Eyes

From time to time the instructors have lazy eyes when we are in front of the classroom with our students watching. At times I know we are worried with the expressions from our students if they like the content that we are going over.

Learning disability or not?

In one of the last classes I taught I had fill in the blank quizzes. I noticed that one of the students had problems writing down the answers, for example: the collecting duct was writen as ....the coletin dut...or the bones was writen as ....the bomess At the beggining I tought it was just mispelling of the words but then 95% of answers in 12 quizzes were like that. How do you approach this student, you do not say anything or do you refer them to somebody whithin the institution you are teaching?

Spanish or other languages during and or after class

Some students speak to me in Spanish because of my background but I never speak to them in Spanish or answer their questions when they are in Spanish. Should I answer them in Spanish? I tell them that all communication must be done in English

ELL Students

My experience has been that even though an ESL student may have very strong English conversational skills, that does not translate necessarily to English reading skills. Furthermore, it appears to me that learning our technology is inhibited because they don't have the vocabulary base in their native language to relate it to.

Online Student Groups & Diversity

This is particularly challenging because diversity can only be based on gender, geographic location and names.
