Learning styles

Do you find that some of your students are a blend of learning styles rather instead of just one style? By using a varity of presentation styles it will help you to tune into what the best 1st and 2nd choise style that works for each student.

Essay Test

I enjoy essay test because the test introduce students to the importance of writing outside of the english classrooms.

Entrance Exams

These exams are a telltale sign of many learning styles and shortcomings.

Students must read there books in order to pass tests!

I am a chef instructor who has reached an impass with my students and their responsibility in reading their assignments. I have tried to give homework that would make them read the required material, only to have students complain about the homework. When I explained that the test results for this course have been a concern and the best way for them to process information they have read is to write a short paper about it, well you would have thought that I asked them to swim the English Channel in Winter. I have also looked at the exams and developed new exams and though their are some questions that could be construed as a little far and wide of the subject; overall the contact is correct accurate and all covered in the chapters assigned. I have also appealed to the students telling them that the content is very detailed and though we go over content in class using power point presentations, lectures and demonstrations they still need to read assigned chapters in order to pass the tests. Please if any one has any thoughts or ideas, I am all ears. Phil

Learning style

When I get a new student in my classroom I always try to find out what kind of student is he/she but for some reasons is hard for me to distinguish between visual learner and auditory learner. I will appreciate your suggestions.

Learning Styles

I think knowing how a student learns will help the instructor a great deal relating the course information. Also, it helps the instructor to create a variety of activities to keep the class interesting.

Making sure they ask questions

When you are presenting subject matter to the class,if some do not understand what you are giving them, you have to try to be aware of the "I dont understand" look that comes over their face, and get them to question what you said. We, as instructors, are not mind readers, but, we usually can tell is a student is not getting it. We have to get through to the students that it is ok to ask questions when the do not understand what the instructor has just laid before them.

Responding to students' answers

All the information in this module has been really good for me, on learning how to handle questions and answers from students

Performance Testing

A performance test at the end of each clinic would be benificial to determine each students true abilities.

Planning

You can never be too prepared!!!

How I try to deliver the info

I try to cover all of these methods. I will read the Power points to my students as well as make additional notes and drawings of visual aides on the white board as I lecture, I will also pass around visual aides as I talk about them during a lecture. Then usually we as a class will head to the lab where I can do instructor led demo's on the information I have covered to give the students a chance to see what we discussed in the classroom live. It also find this to be the best time for students to practice doing the tasks themselves while I am there and they can receive additional input if need be on the task.

Fielding Questions

Beginning students(Theory), love to ask questions off the topic at hand. I try to delicately tell them to wait until we reach that subject, or let them know we can talk about their subject of interest after class.

redirecting a question

I find this to be very helpful to get the students to start thinking.when a question is ask, I will ask the class who can answer it or who has another idea about how they would answer it.this way it can introduce many different concerns into the conversation.

Order of Items

It was very helpful to have a comprehensive detailing of first day responsibilities, but I think that there is, in reality, much more room for flexibility in the order of these activities than indicated in this module. A number of factors will impinge upon the decision whether to review the syllabus, take attendance, etc.

Creating a lesson

How I like to put things in order. One of my favorite teaching styles is hands on. I put the product in their hands and let the student get familiar with the item then I start to talk about the item. I call this shop talk. Making the students think about what they have in their hands then how does it operate?

Motivation

I lead by example, and try to keep everything on the subject matter as simple as possible to help the student understandf the topic better....

Planning

Everything discussed in this course just backs up everyhting that we (instructors) are or should be doing anyway. It's good to know that we're doing it right.

positive reinforcement

No negative waves, always build on what you see that is right, not what is wrong.Try to sandwhich the negativr=e between to positive comments.

Learning Styles

Students learning styles are defined in Jumpstart. If each Instructor knew his students learning style, the curriculm could be tailored more toward the way each class learns. Are the Instructors aloud to access this information???
