disrespect

How do you deal with students with no seens of respect? I try so hard to be a good teacher but how do you show face with the other students when you are disrespected in class time and time again and you think you are doing the right thing by removing them from the class but due to the retension quota the next day their they are again. I fell hopeless and when i talk to my superiors they make me feel like it is my fault. They say it is my inexperience which is causing the tension but i have never had a job where i get disrespected and cursed at almost on a daily basis and no one is held accountible. I am starting to think it is me! I don't think anyone regardless of $$ or job title should have to deal with this on a daily basis. Fortunately, the rest of the class is a pleasure and i will continue to work hard on becoming a better instructor for all students and hopefully make a differents.

9th grade level

I did not realize that students graduating high school were for the most part reading at a 9th grade level maybe some of the issues they are having with testing is because of it and they do not want to say in open forum that they do not understand that is quite a eye opener for me What does that say for our public schools?

Preparation is key

I find that being prepared for the day’s lesson plan is essential. I try to get to the class room well before the students arrive, write the date and objectives for the day on the white board along with any activities or tests we will be doing. I then gather all the items that I would like to pass around and organize them neatly in an area that I can easily access them. Review the lesson plan in my head and make notes on key points that I want to cover. I then take a quick mental break. By getting things together ahead of time, relieves a lot of the stress and anxiety I used to get when I was a new instructor. It prepares me to go into the day with a confident feeling that I know the material, can answer any question that may arise, and can deliver it with enthusiasm.

Theaching Environment - the space

Granted, the teaching space can affect the students. However the information provided in this module must also remind the begining instructor that the teaching environment is relevant to the entire facility they are teaching at. The begining instructor needs to look at what other classes are alloted and work within that environment.

Babysitter

The information on not being drug into students personal baggage could be very beneficial to young instructors. However, this important topic was only a single paragraph. Do any discussion members have a favored method of advising instructors so as not to "enable" students with issues - but at the same time acting in an ethicla and empathetic manner?

Self confidence

I liked how they addressed the confidence issues that some of us face in the classroom. From some of my observations alot of instructors ,while very talented in the field, don't posess the social skills to be confident in front of the classroom. I myself found that it comes in time. Just because you have the knowledge in that field does not mean you are qualified to teach that course.

Developing Additional Skills

How do you develope "Additional Skills" as an instructor by Knowing Yourself? How about , Reading technical journals.

Very good reminders on teaching

I like the format and the style of this type of learning

Tests

I use a variety of tests from skill to short answer and everything in between. That gives me a better idea on my students development and how to aid each one.

Testing

I use a variety of tests from skill to short answer and in between to get a full picture of my students development.

Questions

Questions by both the teacher and the students are very good tools as they open up the communications to everyone.

Learning Styles

When teaching a diverse class many techniques should be used to make sure everyone is understanding the information being delivered.

Covering the course

Be prepared with reference material, demonstration items and objectives before class starts.

First Class

Be confident!

Preperation

I usually spend an hour before class every day making sure I have all my instructions, support materials, etc. ready to go when class starts.

There is good infermation in the text book

If you can get the student to bring it to class

Big Me, Little You!

One thing I found helpful when teaching a class is to get away from the attitude that I know everything and you know nothing. Yes I have more experience than my students but that does not mean I can't learn from them. Whenever a student conveys an question, comment, idea or story try not to quickly shut them down. One of the worst things one can do to a student is making them feel as though they are insignificant. This is a quick way to not only loose the student, but deter the class from participating. One technique I use is to ask the class for feedback on the question, comment, idea or story. If the question is a technical one, I have the class do research to see if they can find the answer. By encouraging this activity, my classes become very interactive and fun.

BEING PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING

I find that when meeting a class for the first time the most important thing I can do to create a first impression is be utterly passionate about what you are doing... this I have always found breaks the ice and motivates the students

quite interesting

I found this first part quite interesting in the fact that most of what they were saying I have adopted into my instructing methods(based on prior teachers that I have had) I think that this is a excellant course for new instructors to learn good habits in the classroom

planning

It has been said that your preparation for a class is the key to the success of your class. This module just reinforces that beleif.
