Pretests

The use of a pretest is a really great Idea. The institution In which I teach uses an entrance exam. I will use a pretest from now on to get my students motivated.

Pruning

I never really related previous experienc to pruning. I will use this to help my class filter the necessary information they learn.

Information Retention

I teach an introductory course to future medical proffesionals. It is extremely challenging to come up with creative ways to help my students retain the information needed to be successful in the more advanced courses

Training and Reptition

Training and repetition on projects help student internalize knowledge and skills. More they repeat and more learning occurs.

All angles

I try to look at all possible outcomes and think through the problem opting for the best choice.

Think first

Often we are quick to respond. I take a moment to pause and think over options and scenarios before I respond to a student.

Instructor Skills

I find when I am introducing a new class of students to my class I am also introducing new concepts to them at the same time and must keep them involved and engaged from the beginning, I have found that if you sale the class to them they stay motivated and from day 1 all the way thru to the end and the only way to do that is to understand you are working with multiple intelligences with different life experiences.

retaining information

I always try to repeat information/skills multiple times over the length of course, to help with retention

pretests

when pretesting, how do relieve test anxiety

applying new material

how do we determine individuals needs when applying new information

adult learners

I have found that adult learners learn best when then can relate information to life eeperiances

What happens now?

Dr. Meers, Once you have pretested, what happens if a majority or a portion of the class is lacking some of the pre-requisite knowledge? I mean, we cannot just go changing the syllabus to cover information from a previous class, right? Evan

How do we find out?

Dr. Meers, with so many students, and so many from varying backgrounds, how does an instructor find out our students learning intelligences. I mean, we canot just ask them, right?

pretesting

pretesting has been fairly succesful for me to evaluate the students and see what the weaknesses are and concentrate on them with certain students

diffrent learners

by observing the type of diffrent learners you have in the class you can figure out what kind of strategies to use while teaching, whether its kinesthetic or visual and so on.

memory

memory retention is very critical when it comes to the learning process, understanding the function of semantic and episodic memory and how to combine the two is importand for a teacher to combine in the facilitating process

Instructor utilizing all learning skills when teaching

Make sure the students have something to do upon entering class. Making the topic interesting that the student will fall in love with it and upon doing that the students will look forward to attend class the next class session.

Graphic Organization

I like this more than most will think. Graphic organization works very well for me and some of my students. When I take notes I do so in picture form. People say a picture is worth a 1000 words, they are correct. I encourage my students who like to doodle to draw what I lecture about. It is “AMAZING” what the students come up with for notes. I encourage an open mind too.

Existing Knowledge

Every student has a trait when they enter a classroom. My job is to get them to understand something new and sometimes I will have to a relative fact between their past and what they are learning. It is like putting together a puzzle.

Pruning

With past experiences that the students bring in the class room, either from a prior employment or even past schooling the students apply what they can to be successful.
