INCREASING STUDENT RETENTION

My method for increasing student retention is structured and resonably successful. #1, lecture covering key points of the lesson while writing student notes on the board and encouraging participation and questions. #2. active student participation demo's,I demo part of an operation and then have the students duplicate what I do. When they are done we go to the next section of the operation. I think it is very important to complete one complete segment a day. #3.Have the students "re-code" their notes.

memory ways

I teach med terminology and i use crazy flash cards with the word part on it and ways to remember the meaning. An example brady means slow..so I have a snail picture which respresent slow movement..and his name is brady

topic geared toward career

I teach medical students and I always try to tell them stories about my past experience in the medical field and also try to show them how what they are learning relates to the field of study.

Helping Students Retain Course Content

I beleive the key to help student retain the most out of course is by integrating new information gradually, and with repetition.

Using Student Needs as Learning Tools

I beleive that in general, adult learners, come to class with some level of anxiety. And so, by using different methods/tools the instructor may get a better result by switching his approach depending on students' needs.

Understanding Multiple Intelligence

I feel it is very important to remind myself on regular basis that students learn in different ways using their own form of intelligence.

The Learning Process

It was beneficial to refresh my memory on the different ways the brain process new information.

Mnemonics

I find that the use of mnemonics is a great help with students learning material and never forgetting. Acronyms are great, as well as inventing sentences with the first letter acting as a cue. Also, the use of mental pictures helps one remember.

Questioning vs coverage model of teaching

I find questioning an extremely important aspect of the critical thinking process, but at times feel I am in a battle in utilizing this in an excelerated program. I try to combat this by providing reading material to get the information to the students, so that I can use "lecture time" to do less "lecturing" & more questioning & reasoning .....

Allied Health & Multiple Intelligences

When it comes to didactic courses such as phlebotomy or ECG, how influencial would the understanding of multiple intelligences be?

Judgement

How can we change an adult-learner's use of judgement effectively in the classroom?

The medium is the message

Critical thinking is very much shaped by the medium by which the message is delivered... as I learned in college, years ago. The medium can limit or distort the information that makes up the message. What are some ways to counteract this reality?

Essential Methods

These are foundational techniques that should not be omitted from any class.

Note taking

Thank you for the suggestions on how to teach students to take notes. I remember many of these from my education but had forgotten them. I think I will use structured note taking, not only to get them to take notes correctly, but also to get them to pay attention in class. Perhaps I will require the notes to be filled out and turned in.

RETENTION OF MATERIAL

IF YOU USE A METHOD I WAS TAUGHT EARLY IN MY INSTRUCTING DAYS AND STILL USE TODAY RETENTION BY MY STUDENTS CAN BE VERY GOOD. MY METHODS: TELL THEM WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO COVER, COVER MATERIAL, TELL THEM WHAT YOU TOLD THEM,

COURSE REVIEWS

I WILL REVIEW DURING AND AFTER A LESSON. AFTER A COMPLETE LESSON HAS BEEN TAUGHT AND BEFORE A TEST I ASK IF THE STUDENTS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AND IF THEY DO NOT THE I ASK SOME AND WILL CALL ON INDIVIDUAL STUDENT FOR AN ANSWER, IF HE/SHE CANNOT ANSWER THE QUESTION I OPEN IT UP TO THE WHOLE CLASS, THIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL TEST TIME.

LEARNING METHODS

WE USE MANY DIFFERENT METHODS OF LEARNING TO HELP OUR STUDENT OBTAIN THE MAX OUT OF A COURSE. SOME THINGS WE USE INCLUDE POWER POINT, HAND NOTES, HANDS ON LABS, TRAINING AIDS FOR DEMO'S, ECT.

instructors and there skills

When i have a new class(every 3 weeks)i have to remember to introduce my course to them and the new concepts that they will need to max there learning during my course. you must sell yopur course to the students to make sure they stay interested during the complete course.

retention

I find that the more relaxed the instructor is with their information which they wish to relay the easier it is to absorb. Tension is good to the extent of a student being fully alert. But it is not good to have excess tension because it becomes the focus instead of the material.

Material retention

I use guided notes as a scaffold for my students. It seems to work well.
