Learning style assessments in class

I teach several classes where the students test themselves for learning styles and intelligences. As part of development and to prove that they have some factor of all 7 intelligences -- I make them try at least one new study method outside their learning style, AND learn to do something new in a less strong intelligence area.

Mnemonics

Mnemonics is very important in the learning process because it gives ways in which we can use cues to help retain information since we all learn differently. Some of the ways that was mentioned in the module were acronyms, which is a combinations of letters in which each letter is cue to help remember information. Acrostic is a sentence in which the first of each word is a cue to the idea to help with remembering information. Last is Loci methods which is placing item you want to remember in a specific area or location in a room to help with remembering information. These are good learning tools and should be implemented in our students learning process.

Reviewing

Reviewing is very important in the learning process because it helps the student retain, understand and answer questions on material. Reviewing is a effective learning tool and can be implemented in many different ways. Reviewing in an instructional strategy and should be used in the classrooms to help with retaining and learning information.

Learning Preferences

I think that it is important to use learning preferences which help students with cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors. Because all students so not learn the same so as instructors we must be able to reach our students. Therefore it is imperative that we use different teaching methods.

Short and long term memory

I think that it is very important to use our short term memory, long term memory and working memory in our learning process. I know that we interact or instruct alot of older students who has been out of the learning enviroment for years and sometimes they feel alittle challenged or intimidated. As instructors we must encourage them to focus and use what they have to help with their educational goals.

Critical thinking challenges

Myself and another instructor were chatting about some challenges when utilizing critical thinking in the classroom. We've found that when we implement critical thinking exercises in the classroom, the students have difficulty realizing that they are actually learning the material as well (they are so used too powerpoint / lecture style learning). Ensuring that we review the achieved objectives at the end of each class can often help alleviate this issue.

Practical application to the classroom

I have attempted to instill critical thinking in my students through using real life scenarios.. commercials, situational examples, etc. I'm interested in hearing methods that other instructors have utilized that seem to assist in developing students critical thinking skills.

abstract

Would abstract be a game like jeoperdy or is the concrere??

Retaining information

It is important to have students show they are paying attention and listening. So after all my lectures, i make sure they get work to correspond to the material that was covered. Also at the end of the day, we always have a quiz to make sure they can let me know they were paying attention to my lectures.

Relevancy

I think its a great idea to review for the test a day prior, but the more we enable the students by making things easier, the more they take that for granted, and become lazier.

Multiple Intelligences

i understand there is a diversity of individuals in the class. Regardless of the multiple intelligences, I teach the same across the board, and everyone is expected to do their best to achieve success.

instructional strategy

When i first come into a class, i look and listen to get the "feel" of the class before i set my standards for the class. I inform the students of the general rules, and wait to see reactions, before i carry on. I also let the students know what is expected of them on the first day, so if they have any problems they can let me know right away.

multiple intelligences

Interesting how all these intelligences are connected in solving problem and can lead one to be successful.

graphic organizers

Using graphs are great as long as students understand them.

to pretest or not to pretest

practical use of a pretest? I find it relatively unnecessary to use a pretest...if you do it before a class to see what students already know, then how would that change the actual content of a class that is already compiled for delivery?

diversity of the delivery of content

I use different delivery methods to appeal to the difference types of learning but also develop students who lack in one inteligence or another.

applied learning

Since I teach a general education class, i apply my subject to each student's major and have seen the results of more knowledge retention and participation.

Retention of Information

I start each class by writing about key concepts for that day on the board.During classroom discussions I explain these concepts. At the end, of class I go around the room and ask students to explain a term/concept in their own words. I also ask students if they still have other questions. I recommend that they highlight or use post its to remember these key items. What do others do along these lines?

Abstract Concepts and Theories

Some students are great at memorizing facts, but they have difficulty with abstract theories. I try to use examples to illustrate how "X" concept has practical applications. What are some other ways to help students use critical thinking skills and experience to solve abstract questions?

The Decreasing Level of General Working Vocabulary

In the last ten years, I have noticed the shrinking vocabulary of post-secondary students. Some of the problem,in part, comes from the telecommunications bubble that many young people live in (facebook anyone?) Another problem is that there are fewer students who gain information from print (books, newsmagazines, newspapers). I usually survey my class to see who reads what. Few read anything of substance. I'm considering using a vocabulary survey at the beginning of the class to see where the class is as far as basic vocabulary then see where to go. There are some who need remedial work! Any other suggestions out there?
