Improving Retention

How an Institute of higher education performs can also influence retention: Are instructors, staff and management personnel qualified, trained and educated to perform and deliver the best experience to their students? Are campus facillities up to date using the latest equipment and technology available to students and staff? Is there a campus culture that demonstrates a true caring for student's success?

Retention - Timing is Everything

A good school with have resources available to assist students with any issues they may have such as counselors, advisors, tutoring, work study jobs, job fairs, etc.

Retention

Factors such as personality, culture, ethnicity, finances, employment, commitment and problems outside of school can all effect a students chances of success.

Retention

There can be many factors that influence retention. From my experience, I believe students who lack focus on their school work do poorly and can cause them to quit or drop out.

Retension / intervention

I feel that to have a successful intervention not only does the student have to want it, but the person trying to do the intervention needs to feel the wants and needs as well. Students can tell if your on the level with them or not and if they feel you're doing this just as a job they may not open up to let help them. We need to care about our students this will keep them interested in us and our curriculum.

Retention.

It is tough to make a student stay at school when so many other factors are pulling them away.

Intervention.

I work with defendant in my full time employment. One on the most important factors is cognitive behavior. This is a good starting point for change.

Understanding Attrition

I do understand things a bit better after completeing this section but is it not as fair question to ask "Is school for everyone"?

Manage Stress

Students are effected by everything around them, we as instructors can manage thier stress in our world, in our class rooms, by the elimination of stress factors. We have to make our enviorment a place they want to be, a place that to them is a sanctuary away from thier day to day stress. This keeps them on line to thier goals, and shows them they can suceed even when everything else seems tough.

Retension Basics

We all are accountable for retension, instructors, management, and departments. We all have to work together to keep in touch with our students. Communication between departments helps greatly in this effort. Not everyone can see what is going on with the students, together we can combine our efforts to help our students help themselfs to a better education.

RT101.

What do we do when the student does not inform us that they want to drop?

Stimulating student senses

During orientation the students will be watching very closely all of their sorroundings, exploring all corners, classrooms and labs. We should conduct cooking demos, create competitions, raffles, team building activities. Give them a small taste on what to expect when they start school.

Meet the instuctors day

I believe if we meet new students and let them know what got us interested in the field we instruct then, we ask the students what got them involved in the career which their going to school for it'll help break the ice and let the new students know how we started out. It will make them feel more comfortable.

Retention

I've always believed that holding students accountable and not making things easy is the best way. They do know when they are being cheated and seem to appreciate it when challenged, as well as supported and shown that it can be done.

retention

Retention is more important than we sometimes realize. In the fact that It effects us in the past, present and future.

Student Retention

At my school as part of the admission process we have integrated a per-intake interview for the incoming student. The students get one-on-one attention, they get to meet and talk with the instructors and support staff, it also give the student the opportunity to asked any pending questions, or seek clarification prior to the start of the program. Each interview last 15-20 minutes, mentorships are formed and our faculty get to formalate plans for academic success based on predetermined questions asked of the student, with the process we have seen an increase in enrollments, retention and overall student satisfaction. This course is very informative, it has given me good ideas that will also be integrated into the programs.

relate stress

We have been at the stress point before , we can help students with this.

retention works

I like that we have these updates to help the students.

when all signs point to no...

When a checklist or self-check results in a "no": What type of advise can I offer to our admissions representatives for working with a prospective students who are obviously ill-suited to the program, yet seem insistent upon enrolling? Aside from telling a student they are not a good fit for the program, how can admissions representatives respectfully urge students to reconsider pursuing enrollment? What are some good tools or assignments admissions representatives could possibly send a prospective student home with before making their decision? Thanks for the input!

retention

retention is very important to all department's.
