Accelerated learning environments and retention

The university for which I teach offers all of its programs online in a highly-accelerated format--we complete 3 and 4-credit courses in 5-1/2 rather than 12-15 weeks.  While retention is improving (thanks to instructors and student advisors), the dropout rate and number of 'ghosts' are still too high.  I'd love to learn about others' experiences with accelerated learning and retention, whether online or in the classroom.

Goals and vision

How can an admissions rep, program director's attitude change a student's vision and goals?

Comfortable Environment

I try to make the learning environment stress free. All work by students gets done, but we listen to the radio, and enjoy our work. Sharing humerous stories I have seen in the industry help keep lectures interesting. Scott H.

Changing lives

Why is education consider a way of changing lives? How can we present this to students to make them understand the importance of education?

HABE's

How can you change an attitude, habit and beliefs of a student who comes from a broken family, none of the members went to college stay on track?

Model, mentoring and monitoring

What do you do and how can you make a student who originally is the only one in the family to go to college, about to graduate and drops out saying "it's not for me"?

just talk to your students

Just talk to them when they seem distant or preoccupied

retention

it take along time to be good enough to work with students to find out what is causing their problem(s),and come with a solution. always seek help if cannot solve the problem, others may have a solution.

Employment Services

Some students already have a job lined up when they graduate. That is one of the reasons why they come here. Other students like the industry but do not know where they want to go. Some students like to relocate and not return to their home state and some students do. Having an employment services staff on site always gives a good impact on retention. This will aid the undecided student and keep retention up.

Retention

Teaching style has a very large impact on retention in my opinion. I have wittiness students leave classes and want to go to a different class just because of the interaction from instructors. Just by keeping the students engaged in activities means a great deal in some learning styles.

Orientation

Orientation really starts when the prospective student first steps on campus. A new student that walks into an unfamiliar area automatically goes into a defensive mode. Mailing out small packages to the students with maps of the area will give them a familiar sight and help ease the tension.

Improving Admissions

Improving Admissions; I really do not know much about the admission process here but from what I have read from the module, have check list and keeping in touch with the students should help retention. I do see one of our representatives quite often checking on her students. I think all reps should do the same.

classroom

The material delivered in the classroom has great impact on the decision to stay in school.

Talking

Just talking about a problem can be very beneficial.

listening

Sometimes the learner just needs someone to talk to, just taking a few minutes to listen can sometimes help out.

retention

Who is responsible for retention?

stress

i remind students we have a councilor if they need someone to talk to. and if they arent comfortable with that i am a good ear, i just might not have all of the answers but i'll give them a hand in trying to figure out how to deal with the situation

Retention

As an instructor, I like to tell students on the first day sop, what to expect out of the class, what is expected of them, and I like to explain to them why my class is important for there success in the industry and why they should stay with my class.

How far do you go

to listen is a gift these days even if you do not have a solution, and so is understanding and compassion. people wants to be heard. offering guidance and support is good, and most people will find their answers within. but the question is, is it better to hold on to a lie if there is no resolutions...

Reaching out to quiet students.

I believe it lends to one's credidility to reach out to all students especially the quiet ones. Quiet students may have behind the seens issues that you may be able to addres to some degree and significantly impact a students life. Ultimately this would improve student retention.
