First Time

This is the first time I have heard about HABES. I found it very interesting and informative. I can see how these can affect our teaching ability and can reflect on our teaching.

Our Campus Commitment to Student engagement

We in the education department at our campus work with the Campus Student service cepartment as a team to engage students in various campus activities such as: Student Drag Racing Special Bowling nights Go kart racing Adapt -a Highway Volunteer opportunities with local dirt track race teams Blood Drives Habitat for humanity

Retention Program

As a school, what are 2 improvements that could be made in the processes & procedures to improve the overall retention of students?

Intervention in the classroom

As an instructor, what methods do you use to identify students before they are no longer able to come to your class? What methods do you use to continue to follow up with those students after your first contact?

Attrition & your classroom

As an instructor, what do you find to be the most common reason students quit coming to class? What methods do you use to overcome this retention challenge?

Your Part as an Instructor

As an instructor, what part do you play to retain students at your campus?

Teamwork

The number one thing about retention that stands out to me is the importance of teamwork among all departments found on campus!

First Impressions

Students react to a freindly attitude even before they reach my class. Just saying Hi and showing interest in them in the hallway creates a foundation forthe future. Sometimes I honestly don't remember our encounter when I do get them in my class, but they do. This means when my oppertunity to teach them comes, we already have a relationship. Hopfully, it is a positive one.

retention and motivation

when ever we hear a student talking about guitting we need to rekindle the fire find out what made the student chose us or the field the subject what ever made him come to us we need to light it up get the student talking some things we can help with somethings we'll pass to someone else with more know how but the main thing is find out what changed

Changing Lives...

This forum really hit home for me. All of the things discussed sounded like the speeches my campus president gives at our staff meetings. We Change Students Lives, our receptionists are the Director of First Impressions and we use the Dream Card which is very similar to the form discussed. So all of these things make a lot of sense to me.

Model, Mentor and Monitor

Model, mentor and Monitor. Most of this is accountability. We need to hold ourselves, our fellow staff members and our students accountable. In order for a school to be successful or anything else for that matter, all parts must work together to make the whole. If we do not work as a team, it is our students who will suffer. And when we do work together as a team, it is our students who reap the rewards.

Directory

at our school we have made a directory it is comprised of telephone numbers, which department handles what issues, who is in charge of the department, If it is divided according to the alphabet we have that information also. We are also committed to escorting the student to the person the student needs to see giving it that personal touch

stress

i believe between the instructors and councilors most students have avenues in which to deal with stress I think having an open door policy where a student can come in and discuss most anything is a benefit to the student I also believe that most students are capable of making the right decision once they talk it out

retention campus changes

our campus was in need of a make over after repainting and rebuilding some of our labs this place looks great the student have pride once again and have stated the brighten up of the class makes them want to come

class picture

I have not thought of a class picture before We take individual pictures at graduation The more I think about it the more I think this would be a great idea bring unity and a sense of belonging

directory

We have just started putting out a directory this let's the student know who to talk to where they are located the times that they are most likely available another thing that we have started We escort them to the dept. they are asking for that puts a personnal touch in it and also lets them know that we care

unprepared instructors

we see this quite often whether the instructor has taught the same course or a new course class prep time is very important and necessary to first keep yourself up to date second to be able to hold accreditbilty in your class if you put out false or misleading information your reputation could be damaged it's one thing to be wrong and try to correct it. It's another to be wrong knowing that you don't know and try to wing it

Student Motivation

Obviously there are several different factors that motivate students. Some have simple motivaters, such as the wanting of a good education with a good GPA, others need more visual items or even an instructor with a lot of enthusiasm. All students seem to need some sort of motivation, but whether it be simple or complex, it is a good atmosphere for a good education if a variety of motivaters are present in the classroom. Younger students seem to need more than the returning adults, but an instructor that enjoys his/her job is a very good start to the obvious visual motivator as well as continuing the motivation throughout the course.

Post-Secondary Education vs Actual Lifestyle Comforts

Students enrolling in new career education fields seems to be the trend when it comes to unhappiness in thier current career choice. The problem is in the expectations of achieving the new goal they set. The capabilities may be present, but the awareness of what it takes to achieve that goal may not. Many students, whether they be right out of high school or returning adults, do not carry out the added responsibilities or professionalism it takes to follow through the course they chose. Granted, there are the few that do realize the importance of continuing education and treat it as such. They take the additional time needed to achieve thier chosen goal, work toward the GPA they would like to receive, change thier given lifestyle to accomodate the added burden of education, as well as working around a current job. Those students that do choose to continue in thier chosen field and work hard to achieve thier new goals believe they will accomplish those goals. Sometimes it is very difficult to change "bad habits," but many students need to expect they will have added ups and downs during the duration of thier education. Many students, usually the younger ones, carry the "I don't care" attitude and give up easily, do not come to classes, and ultimately fail or eventually drop out thinking it was not the right plan for them. Then there are those that try indefinately and accomplish the goals set for themselves, receive a good GPA, and ultimately graduate knowing they are closer to that new life-changing, beneficial career. Students do not enroll expecting to fail, but that also happens. They enter with a dream of making a better lifestyle for themselves, this is where faculty learns that sometimes non-academic issues get in the way of learning. We, as faculty, cannot fix every problem from every student. We need to focus enough to help the student retain and learn as much as possible to help achieve the ultimate goal set by that student. Having a certain lifestyle is a choice each individual makes, but choosing to add more education in thier life makes that lifestyle seem even more difficult. The students currently in the workforce, usually returning adults, seem to take thier new education choice a bit more serious and try to get the most out of it that they can. They tend to take more responsibility for thier actions and thier education. In comparison, the younger student tends to try to skate by as if still in high school, just trying to achieve a passing grade. Ultimately, the student coming from high school will seemingly be more passive in the area of responsibilities and eventually be the more likely one to fail. More so, not having a high level of effort towards the final goal will likely lead to a withdraw. The lifestyle of the younger student is not as "lived" as those of returning adults and is not treated as such. The importance of education is seemingly unknown to these students and will be reflected within the classroom. Many experiences can be discussed; We wonder, then, is it really possible to change the younger generation and have them look at education as being the cornerstone of thier life, or even a positive possibility of a new road to follow?

The Importance of Goals

Goals are something that everybody needs to set, not only in the business world but in life. With out goals we loose faith, we get depressed, we set life to the side. Once you have set your goals, made your plans, you now need to strive for them no matter who is trying to stop you with their negativity.Students can be turned around if they see you, hear you and watch you reach for your goals, this is motivation for even the most negative of people. Don't wait for 11 others to come to help you, change 11 people to be positive and help them achieve their goals. This will spread like wild fire in the ranks of our students and our instructors, but you have to be willing to try. It is too easy to give up and not have goals, life is not easy, so make it the best life you can and make your goals and those of others come true.
