Hi Jill:
It may send the wrong kind of message to the student if we come across disorganized. What kind of long-term impact might it cause if our behavior suggests to the student "I don't care enough about your learning to be organized"?

Regards, Barry

i have noticed that if i am in early and prepared for class so that class runs smoothly students will follow suit

I believe this is an important factor in the following categories:
-time management
-consistancy
-respect and interest from the students

Being prepared shows my students that I care about the money they are investing and I will not waste their time. It has a very positive impact on student experience

Hi Maria:
Another thing disorganization may result in is the message that you don't care enough about the student's learning to be prepared for them.

Hi Herb:
It might send an inappropriate message to the student when the instructor is not prepared. For example, it may suggest "I don't care enough about your learning to be prepared".

A class can get out of control quickly if you run out of activties or lecture. I teach two, four classes each day and I dedicate one hour each day to preparing for them. It has made class time run so much more smoothly and stress free. Im much happier now.

I strongly believe in 'Lead by Example'. If an instructor comes to class everyday organized and prepared for class, 95% of the students will be organized becuase they know the instructor cares about his/her work. Adult learners come into a classroom with many different attitudes and opinions of being a learner and many of them haven't been in school for a long time. If their surroundings are kept organized, consistant, and prepared, the changes around them are a much easier to deal with.

Instructors set the example, as some students have not been exposed what it means to be organized.

By being organized and prepared, the students will gain more out of our presentation. If we are coming in confused, unorganized, or unprepared, the students will follow suit.

Just as instructors expect students to be prepared, so should instructors be prepared. A respect for the time allocated for instruction/learning must be practiced for the good of the educational dynamic.

It really sets the tone and structure for the course for both the students and the instructor. Students are also likely to understand that they too will need to be organized and prepared to learn.

Agreed. Being prepared for class gives the instructor added confidence beyond knowledge of the subject matter.

Students have limited time. They take time away from family, work, and other pursuits to attend class. If an instructor is not well-organized and well-prepared, it shows a lack of respect for the students.

It is not only beneficial for instructors to be organized and prepared for each class, but it is also beneficial to the students for the instructor to be organized and prepared for each class. Not only will organization and preparation make for a smooth class, students will get more out of a class that has been carefully planned and organized.

I quite agree. We expect them to be ready to receive what we have to offer; it is our responsibility in return to be ready to effectively transfer that knowledge

Students are definitely picking up most of their clues of how the class will go from the instructor. Is he/she engaged with the students, does he/she seem prepared and knowledgeable, will this be an interesting class?? All of these questions will quickly be answered if the instructor is NOT prepared; we want the questions to be answered in a much more positive light.
Much of my confidence, even in the areas where I am most knowledgeable, come from preparedness.

Proper prior preparation allows the the teaching/learning dynamic to take place without distracting interruptions.

Being prepared for class shows displays, esp on the frist day, paints a picture of the instructors personality and teaching skills/styles to the students.

organization also teaches the students the importance of being prepared
