The student is looking to the instructor for many things. Theywant to know that theinstructor will have their best interest at heart.This gives reassurance when the instructor is prepared.
Hi Thongsamay:
A prepared and organized teacher means they are ready for class: lessons, materials, media, handouts, fielding questions, assignments, etc. Making this flow smoothly while trying to engage all students takes planning and thought. Without that, great outcomes are not likely.

Hi John:
Preparation means think about your class from the perspective of the student.
When you walk in is the teacher there? Can you ask questions without feeling like you're bothering them? Are all the materials neatly laid out? Does the lesson flow smoothly with natural pauses for breaks, etc. These are subtle traits that telegrapgh a message to students: "Teacher on the ball". Anything less is...less than wonderful.

Hi Arthur:
Well, I get your point; I could have a sidebar about learning always being easy.
But you've got a point about our personal preparation being necessary. The thought, planning, effort, and time that's put into a lesson will be evident as the class proceeds.
Materials are ready, Handouts are copied. Slides and lecture flows smoothly and seamlessly from transition to transition. Questions are drawn right into the lesson as if planned that way. Then back to the lesson. Students will expect classs to be under the control of the teacher.

How can an instructor expect students to come to class prepared to learn if the instructor is not organized and prepared. As instructors our first step is to lead by example. It show respect for the students if we are organized and prepared.
Being organized and prepared really helps make teaching the content to the class flow smoothly. When your not prepared you tend to stumble on your words and then the students don't understand the content being taught.
Simply said if you are not prepared it can be seen a mile away, also your students will not prepare.

In order to communicate the lesson to the students and have them absorb the information, it is imperative for the instructor to be organized. If the instructor is not organized the students pick up on that. The obvious reaction to that is the students feel that since this information is not important enough for the instructor to deliver it in a organized, deliberate manner, then it isn't essential to the course and not important for the student to pay attention to. If you are organized, prepared and deliberate in your delivery it is easier for the students to learn
Hi Robert:
Very true. Managing a class period or session requires our senses to be tuned to things like:
* Are the students listening
* Who's not paying attention
* Am I being effective
* Is everyone engaged
To do this while trying to coordinate getting class ready, making copies, focusing on questions, just won't cut it.

We are preparing our students to be successful in their career fields by being reliable,organized professionals. What we expect of our students we must expect for ourselves. We are their roles models. We must be reliable, organized professionals.
Once you are organized and prepared to teach you can actually focus on the students and make sure they are learning the material instead of worrying about whether you, as an instructor, are ready.
Hi Gordon:
Time before class is good if it's available. Even just chatting informally (if students don't have questions) is helpful and builds relationships. Also, will strenthen the focus of in-class time.
