I teach math, which I know is kind of a sore spot for some students. Many of my students come to me with horrible experiences in math and its hard to try and rebuild a relationship with the student and me as their math teacher. However, I make it a personal goal of mine to reach out to every student in order to make math influential in some part of their life.

Hi John:
This seems very like a very profound statement!

One way a student can determine whether they've learned or mastered the required material is to teach it to others. Any gaps or blank spaces that come up - that identifies where more work is needed.

I like your thinking. I hope to do the same.

My goal is to guide/educate students to achieve success in his or her chosen career. This goal is measured by my national exam pass rates and graduate surveys.

When a student becomes a teacher in their own right, that student has truly learned.

Hi Robin:
For me, the simplest way to state the goal of educating is more functional: "to transfer knowledge we have to students, who can apply that to their personal lives and careers.

Amplifying that a bit, we have the opportunity to convey much about the specific topics and course material, and also about the world of work, and the supporting factors that make work a success, such as the soft skills of timeliness, punctuallity and attendance, dress, behavior, appearance, language, attitutde and affect, motivation, and good communication.

These kinds of things are often lacking in even some of the smarter academic students. So as teachers, we could add that our goal is to transfer good work and life skills to students, to be be good citizens, valuing others while respecting the diversity likely to be found in most contemporay work settings these days.

The most important goal of education, in my opinion, is teaching a student to acquire information and skills necessary for living, not just working in a career. In order to be a successful person, you need to constantly be learning SOMETHING, not just classroom lessons but interaction lessons, life skills lessons, family lessons and personal development lessons. I want to help my students get to the point of critically thinking about who they are and what their goals are, not just the subject at hand. Learning is an integration of many lessons, not just the in class, textual information. Being a teacher also means that we need to teach ourselves how to educate ourselves more. We are our own students as well.

Hi Curt:
Great!. Provide a foundation. Make it applicable to a career or set of skills. And convey the importance of lifelong learning.

I've said in the past, "do we want someone who 10 years experience, or one years experience 10 years in a row", implying there has been little growth since school days.

Hi Cornlius:
We do hold an awesome challenge to birth the next generation of thinkers, leaders, businessmen and women, entrepreneurs, and workers. We can create that level of excellence, or rely on same old, same old, and really fail our students and altruistically speaking, our society.

Hi Margaret:
I say that anyone who doesn't flow with the changing times, stays current in their field, and seek ways to improve themselves is not completly fulfilling their mission as a teacher. Students expect the most accurate, up to date, and meaningful learning experiences, and I don't think you can give what you don't have.

Barry, the goal of educating students is to impart knowledge in my subject area to others that have chosen to make a career in a similar field. Aside from my educational training, over 25 years of experience in my field provides a significant experiential base from which I can enhance the material being presented. Ultimately, the goal is to motivate these students to continue seeking information in their chosen area and apply the knowledge they acquire from formal education to the workplace.

There is a factual saying that children are our future. In order for our future to be bright, future leaders (students) must be properly educated and trained to take on the enormous responsibities they will inherit from previous generations. Education is important in helping students to become good citizens, and successful in life. Last, education is a vehicle that carries students to their dreams.

Being a subject matter expert is a continuous challenge which I really like. I think we are always being educated as we educate.

Hi Virginia:
Most participants in this module teach in vocational courses. In these settings, we have experts from their field or professions teaching their knowledge based on past work experience, education, training, and are generally considered subject matter experts (SME). We are capable to convey and discuss all aspects of our profession.

Therefore, the goal is to be able to transfer that knowledge to students. Good teachers find creative ways to to this that is fun and interesting, able to keep the students attention and focus on the topics required. This makes for more enjoyable classes.

This knowledge also has skills, proficiencies, customs or competencies that are associated with the profession, and who better to provide these than the SME!

The goal for educating students is to provide knowledge for new careers.

Hi Roger:
Teachers who have a natural desire to share what they know are especially effective. I see students migrate to these folks more often, and because they like doing it, these teachers get an extra sense of satisfaction knowing they've helped others.

I would have to say that I have the oppurtunity to pass on alot of knowledge & information from my career. I have always taught anyone anything that I know. Especially if they were wanting to learn. It is an awesome feeling to see someone that you brought up through the ranks succeeding in their lives. It's a Wonderful life!

Hi Tanya:
Hopefully this can happen for most of us, quite an important responsibility.

Usually, our past training, education, work experience, and skills are what get us hired. Therefore, our goal should be, at least in part, sharing all we have and have learned, then our students can take that further down the road. We can only consider ourselves teachers if students learn from us. Boy, it takes time, effort, and patience!

Regards, Barry

I feel that the goal of educating students is to properly train my replacements. By bringing if life experiences, they can learn from my ways and better the profession when they get out of school.

Hi Justice:
My (shortened) defintion is "Transfering our expert knowledge to hopeful students in a meaningful manner that can be applied in some career, technical, or professional work setting.

Our goal is teaching. Students hope to learn. Our challenge is to try to make these two elements combine for a successul "new compound".

Regards, Barry
