Teaching the musculokeletal system in Anatomy, I not only did lecture but had students come up and point out the names of the bones on a skeleton. Making a game out of it, We would count how many bones they could name in so many seconds. I also played the song "Dem bones" where we all sang and touched the bones using the medical terminology instead. Great class with great grades.

HiJamie, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, although it may be easier for an instructor to teach just using the delivery style he/she prefers, it is not very effective. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I always try and find out the learning styles of the students. Sometimes I do this by simply asking them about themselves, or I may have them take an ungraded quiz and have the studnets perform a variety of tasks/questions and see how they do. By better understanding how each student lerns, I can construct what information, how the information will be disseminated and I also understand better of how I may need to construct my tests in order to give the students the best opportunity to do well and truly assess each one.
Trying different teaching styles and noting what students take in the material and in what way would be a valuable piece if information to have.
The only way you can be an effective instructor is to understand yuor student's learning style. If you are only teaching one way of learning, many of your students miss out on the information you are teaching.

Dental hygiene is all about visual learning and hands-on training. It is important to realize this for effective teaching.
I agree. By using Power Points and videos in the classroom, my student are hearing, seeing and useing notetaking to absorb the material. In Labs I use a hands on approach.
Hi Ruben, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when we make the effort to address all of the learning styles we definitely see positive results class wide. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

By knowing the preferred method of learning of my students I am able to tailor my instructional methods according to the individual student. Allowing the student to gain a better grasp on the material, keeping them engaged and scoring well on exams will increase the productivity of the class as will improve retention. All positives on metrics by which I as an instructor and my program are measured.
I love doing demos I think it really helps instruction come to life
There is more than one way of learning. If instructor's only focus on their own particular way of learning they may decrease the success of other learners.
Hi Paul, Yes, that's exactly the point of teaching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Frank, Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like your idea of giving students just the "bones" of your presentations to encourage them to pay attention and participate! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

If I know the learning styles of the students I can accomplish the goals and objectives set out while enhancing the self-esteem and creating a comfortable learning environment for each student.
I try in incorporate different approacehs of teaching, to reach to the students with different learning styles.
I use powerpoint presentations, with lecture,diagrams,etc...
But i hand out a skeleton version of my presentation to the class that has a bunch of fill ins.
This way they have to take notes, listen, read off the board, and so on...
By doing it this way I try to use all the senses possible,listening,looking,writing,dialouge,etc..
I think it helps retain the information better.
Then they get a email of my presentation once i wen tthrough it so they can get copy of everything in case they missed anything!
to provide demos to a class is great but we as instructors also have to prsent info in a variety of ways. lectures, demos, videos, fieldtrips, and group activities just to name a few. do this so that at some point u are reaching every student...
