SOMETIMES WHEN YOU SHOW A PERSON HOW TO DEMONSTRATE A PROCEDURE AFTER YOU LECTURE AND GAVE THEM THE INFORMATION. IT TRULY HELP THE LEARNING PROCESS
This allows for a a balance in the delivery of the presentation
I give my psych 101 students a learning styles questionnaire on the first day of class that they can tabulate and then I go over it with the class. i always get a mix of styels but it reminds me that i have to incorporate all 4 styles into the class. not every class has tactile components so i tell students they can squeeze a ball or standup or even pace in the back while i lecture, use powerpoints, or show streaming video, as long as they do not disturb anyone else.
I believe this knowledge allows you to better teach and the student to better understand the subject
Our school has a career success class that deals with student learning methods. It allows the class to understand this concept and apply it. This understanding makes it easy for me to identify the predominent methods and focus on them. However I have been a strung believer in presenting information in as many forms as possible to involve as many senses as possible. It has lead to many students coming back to me at later dates nad commenting on how they liked the classes and got so much from them. I can't think of a better confirmation of my efforts and their work.
Hi Rose, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, I have taught for 30+ years and I agree, it sometimes easier to just do what we have done all along. Still there is something invigorating about trying new things! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

IT HELPS TO DELIVER THE MATERIAL IN A MORE EFFECTIVE FORM.
If I have more students that are hands on learners I incorperate more of that type of teaching to the course. I find this helps the students better understand the information.
Being a veteran teacher, it is too easy for me to slip into a habit of teaching that does not reach all my students. This course reminds me to be cognizant of the different styles.
Knowing the learning styles of your students allows you to prepare lesson plans and apply teaching strategies that will allow you to reach all learners in the classroom. This knowledge increases success of all students which make the instructor teaching methods effective.

Hi VIRGILIO, Thanks for your post to the forum. The first Computer class can be frustrating and intimidating for some students. As you mention, making sure that they understand the importance of mastering the basics is essential to their future success. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

my goal as an instructor is delivering the information in a matter in which all students will learn it. Reaching all of the learning styles possible the first time, or even the second will allow class to flow into the next item quickly.
I REALLY LIKE THAT IDEA, AMY. Particularly with adult learners, they don't want their time wasted with any esoteric or extraneous information.
By learning how our students learn, it enables us to better prepare, and make them all part of class discussion. Also helps the instructor to come up with new challenges for them as well.
I believe while doing a lecture it helps to draw out examples on the board and then to go in the shop and demonstate helps.
IF you know the types of learners in your classroom, you can tailor your lesson plans accordingly. In most situations you will have a mix of different learners in each class. This is why it is so important to vary your delivery methods.
