What does it mean when a patient is RH Negative?
How will you advise a patient who is RH Negative if she is considering pregnancy?
Closed: What is the law concerning continuing education requirements for massage therapists in NY?
Open: Why do you think the state of NY implemented the continuing education law?
Closed: How long did the "special operation" to capture Fort Eben Emael in WWII take?
Open: Would the outcome have been any different if the Germans had tried to capture the fort with conventional forces and why?
Closed: What does APGAR stand for?
Open: When would using an APGAR score be useful in taking care of your patient?
Asking probing questions is a very effective technique to improve learning that I sometimes under utilize. I plan to use more probing questions in my next class.
Closed: Is addition commutative?
Open: If you are in the throes of test anxiety and can not remember whether addition is commutative, how can you rediscover if order matters when adding? Can you apply your strategy to other situations?
Closed - What are the five psychological theories discussed in chapter 1?
The closed questions only requires the students to list the theories from the chapter
Open - Describe the similarities and differences between the five psychological theories discussed in chapter 1.
The open question helps to determine the extent to which a student understands a concept or process.

I definitely call students by name. It takes me about a week to learn the names and I use them regularly. The interesting thing is that I forget their names as soon as the class is over.
