Paul,
While this is true, sometimes during reviews we do not have enough time to spend on discussions and so we need to use closed questions so that we can get more information in.
Judy Mohammed
Billy,
Probing is a good tool to use when guiding students to correct information. They also appreciate application questions which give them a feel of the real world.
Judy Mohammed
Russell,
These are good examples. Do you use questions often in classes?
Judy Mohammed
Cynthia,
Do you use many questions in class. Which do you prefer to use , closed or open questions?
Judy Mohammed
Often times the question is written, as on a test or quiz. in this case the question can have many forms at different times, example, the question "name the three main tribes of the early Caribbean" is a closed question. It can be opened by asking the followup "what happened to each of the tribes to result in their downfall." Usually this is done in the review of the quiz to help with the interconnection of the tribal influence. Also, when reviewing the quiz or test, the wrong answers can also be explored to make logical conclusions.
I did not even know there were that many ways to digging for knowledge. I have been using open and closed questions ever since I startd teaching, just did not know it.
Closed: please list the five components of integrated marketing communications
Open: how are the five components of integrated marketing communications related; if you were a marketing manager, what factors of IMC would you utilize and why?
An example of a closed question would be "How many teeth are in the permanent dentition?"
An example of an open question would be " Given your knowledge of the teeth in the permanent dentition, what problems might arise if some of these teeth are missing?"
Israel,
Good examples. Do you use questions often in classes?
Judy Mohammed
CPR class
Close: Where do we check for pulse in infants during CPR?
Open: Why we don't check the carotid pulse on them?
Susan,
These are great questions. Do you use them in your classes?
Judy Mohammed
Rose,
These are good examples and I am sure that you use them in your classes.
Judy Mohammed
For my Medical Terminology class: What does the term cyanosis mean? If a patient is cyanotic, what is the underlying cause? What are some of the conditions/diseases that can result in cyanosis?
What is the circulation of the heart? (close question). How does this effect the lung and why?
Robert,
These are good examples. Do you use questioning often in your classes?
Judy Mohammed
In my ALH 155 course which is an A&P class I have asked:
Closed- Which of the blood types is the Universal donor?
Open- Why is the universal donor able to be given to any blood type?
Keegan,
This so true. This encourages critical thinking as you lecture so they are more likely to remember the material.
Judy Mohammed
Joanne,
These are both examples of closed questions since they do have definite answers. Why questions might be more open ones.
Judy Mohammed
Current closed question: "who remembers how to hold the brush for this exercise?"
I could change it by simply asking"Why do we hold the brush in a particular way when performing this technique?"
I really like this idea!! I feel that if students get a chance to answer questions like this OR hear it coming from fellow students rathe than just the instructor, they are more likely to remember it in the future
How many steps is the blood flow through the heart? What are the steps of blood flow through the heart?
