It seems that you are doing a great job keeping your students engaged and giving much opportunity for critical thinking. I also use open-ended questions and this method encourages even the quiet students to participate.

Closed: What are the four Enduring National Interests of the United States?
Open: Which of the four Enduring National Interests do you feel is most important and why?
Changing the verbage forces the student to change from simply listing these interests to applying reasoning and logic to determine why they feel one interest is more important than another. Its also opinion-based which is a great lead off question. It creates a healthy debate between the students with me playing devil's advocate on each one. If executed properly, everyone is invovled and enaged.
It's worked pretty well since I changed it up!

Closed: What is the primary function of thyroid hormone?
Open: Why would a person with an elevated level of thyroid hormone be at risk for cardiac collapse?
Closed question: which side does a cane go on when the left foot is injured? Right side
Open question: Why does the patient hold the cane in the hand opposite the injury site. Base of support, increased stability, increased arm swing as in normal gait.
Closed: Name 3 corporations that have been fined for fraudulent activities?
Open: Why did these companies engage in this behavior?
Which catheter is used for this exam; an 8 Fr. or a 10 Fr.? Why would this catheter be used during this exam?
Just by asking the student to explain why, the question changed from closed to open. I use this strategy all the time

A closed question for one of my courses may be: Identify the verb in this sentence. One way to change this into a more open question would be to ask: How do you know which word in this sentence is the verb?

You seem to be doing very well, Diana. You are using the running notepad, which I employ often -jotting down notes as they come up during the lecture. This is most helpful and, with this practice,you will soon be doing things "on the fly."
I naturally use closed questions in my lectues. That's why I'm taking this course. I'm trying to wrap my brain around using more open questions in hopes of generating more discussion in my classes. I find that if I think about the wording of my questions as I read the lecture materials and write questions in the margins of the book, I will use them. I just wish I could do this on the fly! :)
