Glenn,
Good questions. Do you use these in your classes?
Judy Mohammed
John,
This is great and I am sure that your students appreciate it. Open questions do lead for interesting and interactive classes.

What is the season for fire?

"Provide an example of Title 22 funding sources for education." (Closed).
"How would one program for Title 22 Funding sources." (Open)
(CLOSED) Did you like High school?
(OPEN) What was your high school experience like?
Is it advised to have questions made up ahead of time? This is the first exposure to how to question. Very enlightening!!! I have done some of this just through common sense but will now have knowledge to improve my questions. Do you recommend calling on students by name? I have not ever done that before, I let them answer at will.
A Closed example might be:
What is a flap actuator motor for?
An Open example might be:
Why do you think the industry has changed flap controls from manual to computer controlled?
I like to use more open type questions as I feel it gets the students talking more. When a students answers an open type question it may open up many more questions an instructor can use. I also like the students to take time and think about answer giving them adequate time to give a good answer.
Closed: name a design that uses the contour sloper.
Open: why is contouring important to this design? What would happen if we used a sloper that didn't have contouring?
What is impedance?
What is the relationship between inductive reactance and resistivity and how do the affect the impedance of the coil?
Karen,
I do agree. I use more open questions, however, when time is limited, I rely on closed questions.

Dawn,
These are very good examples. Do you use these in discussions in class?
Judy Mohammed
Diane,
The second example is also a closed question since there is a definite answer. If you ask why questions or ones about other options, they might be more open.

Would you agree that OPEN questions also make the class more interactive and fun - not to mention more depth of knowledge overall?
closed question: List 3 different types of indices used to measure decay, fillings, extractions and/or missing teeth.
open question: Two parts, describe how you would use one of these indices. Also, explain which population would benefit from the index you described.
yes, I use these on my exams for community dental health
CLosed: Does a patient have to be catherized to do a sterile urine specimen?
Open: What supplies are needed to optain a sterile urine specimen?
Marie,
This is true since there would only be one possible answer. There is some thought that goes into it, but still only one answer is possible.

Would it be correct that a multiple choice test is a closed question testing technique?
Deronde,
Closed questions can be answered with yes or no. Open questions open the classes for more discussions.
Judy Mohammed
I love a closed question because it can not be answerd with a simple yes or no answer. This allows the person the informatiom that seems to be appropriate at that time.
