Ben ,

This is a good example of a closed ended question. Do you utilize open ended questions as well?

Judy Mohammed

What is the spec for the delta pressure feedback exhaust sensor?

If we have a value of 2.6 volts at idle. How would the engine run?

Schnikka,

Good plan! I like to teach using the Socratic method, challenging students to think critically by asking questions.

Judy Mohammed

SUSAN,

Good examples! Do you utilize both open and closed questions in your lectures?

Judy Mohammed

shelina,

Excellent tool! When you become accustomed to these kind of questions, you will no longer need to write them in, they will come naturally.

Judy Mohammed

Stuart ,

Good examples here! Do you utilize both types in your classes?

Judy Mohammed

Randall,

I, like you, like to challenge my students to think critically.

I ASK OPEN AND CLOSED ENDED QUESTIONS SO THAT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO THINK ABOUT IT AND THEN RELATE BACK TO THAT QUESTION

Closed: How many leaflets does the mitral valve have?
Open: What is the reason for the leaflets?

What is the length used to give a subq injection?

Why is it important to use a 5/8 inch needle when giving a subq injection.

This is something I need to work on. I was trained in the military so I often revert back to drilling my student but ask open ended and critical thinking on tests. I am learning how to add these question in my lecture. I even started to write them ahead of time into my PowerPoint’s

What is climb milling?(closed)
What is the difference between climb milling and conventional milling, and why is one preferable to the other? (open)

Closed: What allows a constant velocity shaft to change length?

Open: Why is it necessary for a constant velocity shaft to change length and what part allows this to happen?

I spend a lot of time in my lectures asking questions. I try to make my students think critically about everything we discuss as I feel that if you can visualize how something works the information will stay with you longer than if you just memorize facts about it.

Barry,

Great job! It is exciting to see how we turn any question into an open-ended one, unless, of course, if we are looking for very specific information.

Because I teach Nutrition... an open ended question in my clas would be:

What two key nutrients are essential in cell development and revitalizing the immune system?

I think it would be better asked as:

In your opinion, how would you easily change your diet, or the diet of one of your clients, to include a greater amount of Vitamin D and B12?

If there are allergies and or food sensitivities involved, what are other options that you might suggest?

Michael,

Good examples and explanations for those who need it. It is also interesting when we get another question in response to our original question, we now have a discussion going.

Judy Mohammed

Brian,

Good job on requiring a little more information to turn a closed ended question into an open ended question.

Judy Mohammed

Christopher,

Great examples! Do you use more open ended or closed ended questions?

Judy Mohammed

Carla,

Great example of how you can turn a closed ended question to an open ended question.

Judy Mohammed

Kimberly,

Great examples! Which do you use more - open ended or closed ended?

What size does the recipe say to cut the mirepoix?

Revised:

How large should we cut the mirepoix and why?

(The longer a mirepoix cooks, the larger the pieces should be...in general, we teach techniques over recipes, which helps reduce the number of closed questions. The answer is seldom 1/4"x1/4"; it is much more frequently "What are we using it for?"
