Making course requirements clear for students
What methods do you use to make the course requirements clear for the students?
On the first day, the syllabus is given and all important requirements are highlighted and in bold print so the student can go back and read it at any time. I also have them write down pertinent information on the very first page of their notebook.
Since it is required that our students sign the syllabus acknowledging that they have received and read it, on the first day of class we review the complete syllabus as a group and discuss key points such intermediate exams, finals, grading system and classroom rules / etiquette.
I use handouts, visual materials and anything else that gets the students attention. Most times they learn quite well all materials
I agree too. I like to give the students the "road map" on day one. I want to let them know the path we will take together.
Hi Anthony,
Great idea! Calendars are a saving grace!

On the first day I spend time going over the course syllabus. At my school we use a weekly assignment calendar, so I also go over that putting emphasis on when tests will be or major projects.
Hi Anthony,
Students having a visual to go by adds better clarity, and the students really do take learning more seriously if it is indicated ont the whiteboard.
Patricia Scales
I pretty much do the same thing. I also utilize the whiteboard and list the outline and objectives for the day's lesson.
Hi Corean,
Excellent practices to have in place to ensure students are getting the requirements of the course.

The first day, I write on the board the agenda for the day. Then I go over the syllabus, lesson plan, due dates and grading prior to starting their first lecture along with class discussion.
Hi Wesley,
The board is a great use of visual aid. Students understand the importance when things are written on the board.
Patricia Scales
Write the important requirements on the bored every class.
Hi Glenn,
Your students should appreciate you reminding them. There are some instructors that do not remind students and will grade the student accordingly for missed assignments.
Patricia Scales
I would love to do that, but sometimes I run into a problem with time. If I run out of time and don't finish the goals of the day there is always that student that points it out.
I make sure my syllabus is clear with dates, times, and late policy. On the first day of class we review each item and discuss any concerns. Each week at the end of class I review what will be required by the next class meeting.
The very first day I go over the course sylabus in detail and explain all of my expectations for the course. I ask the students for there concerns about the sylabus and address each question individually.
Hi Jessie,
Yes! This is exactly what needs to be done to make course requirements clear. Students need to know exactly what is expected of them.

On the first day of class, I give my students the syllabus for the course. I then review the syllabus and make the objectives and requirements clear.
Hi Linda,
You have a great system in place to ensure course clarity. Calendars are great for students use to help keep them on point.
